Standoff after eviction notice shooting; 2 dead
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/arti...63bde069e0

A sheriff's deputy and a civilian were killed Thursday when gunfire broke out as authorities tried to serve an eviction notice at a California apartment complex, officials said.

The shootings led to a standoff with a suspect who was believed to be holed up inside an apartment at the Whispering Woods development.

The FBI and SWAT teams surrounded the building, and authorities evacuated surrounding residents.

Two deputies went to the north Modesto home to deliver the notice when the shooting occurred around 11 a.m., Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said.

Neighbors Levi Middleton and Jennifer Diaz told the Modesto Bee (Sorry, no url shorteners/HxXK7j ) they heard multiple gunshots in rapid succession, as if fired from a semi-automatic weapon.

A sheriff's deputy and a civilian were killed Thursday when gunfire broke out as authorities tried to serve an eviction notice at a Central California apartment complex, officials said.

The shooting led to a standoff with a suspect who was believed to be holed up inside an apartment at the Whispering Woods development in Modesto.

More than 100 law enforcement officers from the Central Valley arrived at the scene. FBI and SWAT teams surrounded the building and authorities evacuated nearby residents while others remained in their homes.

Authorities later fired flash grenades and tear gas in the area where the shooting occurred.

Modesto shooting death of deputy, civilian draws massive police response

Law enforcement agents from Stanislaus County and beyond were called to respond to the shooting deaths of a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputy and another civilian in northwest Modesto shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12.

Those included a couple of units from Patterson Police Services, which returned to Patterson after other deputies were able to take their place, according to Sgt. Anthony Bejaran of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Several media reports have indicated the two victims, who were unnamed by the sheriff’s department, were shot dead when attempting to serve the suspect with an eviction notice at the suspect's apartment on the 2100 block of Chrysler Drive.

As of 5:20 p.m., a couple of television news stations had reported a loud explosion after a SWAT team sent robots to apparently destroy the door of the suspect's home during an ongoing standoff with police. However, the Irrigator has not confirmed those details. Armored vehicles from outlying agencies and FBI agents have come to the scene to assist with the effort.

Area residents were evacuated to a nearby church earlier in the day.

“We are just waiting now, hoping to end this peacefully,” Bejaran said just before the television reports of the door being destroyed.

Bejaran indicated more details would be released during a press conference Thursday evening. As of 5 p.m., it was unclear when that would take place, Bejaran said.

Big time.... look at NYPD how the Chief said they could shoot down an airplane if they had to. Look at all the police towers departments are getting - NYPD is rumored to have well over 50 of them last I heard.

check out the update:

Quote:UPDATE - 3:15 p.m. The standoff has entered its fifth hour. More than 100 law enforcement officers are on scene, representing at least 15 agencies. Four SWAT teams are involved, as is the Stanislaus County bomb squad.

Authorities were withholding the names of the two men who were killed, one of them a sheriff's deputy, the other described by Sheriff Adam Christianson as "a civilian."

So the Sheriffs Office considers themselves .mil?

I see,

But actually, I was referring to this occasion as a perfect opportunity to blacklist semi automatic weapons as well.
