Begger told police he makes $60K a year panhandling

A 45-year-old man who Oklahoma City police arrested last month on charges of panhandling, says he makes $60,000 a year begging for money.

The man, Shane Speegle, was first approached by a police officer who told him that he needed a permit and an insurance policy to panhandle. The officer warned Speegle to leave, but arrested him after he was seen begging for money about 20 minutes later.

I've done some panhandliing when I was in dire straits. I was lucky to get 3 or four bucks an hour. Though someone did pay for a motel room for me once during a snowstorm.

A few people in a forum I used to visit also made some GENEROUS wire transfers to my local supermarket though, western union. Over the course of that winter, a few people sent me probably 5 or 600 bucks altogether if I remember right.

Anyone who ever lived in NYC knows the homeless are not getting rich out there. Most days they are lucky to get enough to buy one meal. They have it hard enough without people stirring up shit about them.

i know someone who is a street kid. they tell me that 80 % of the people with signs like " trying to get money to go home " or whatever story are straight up lying. they also make 15$ an hour easily and then go and spend it all on heroin. sounds like its fairly common. i am sure some people have it rough, but some people just make bad choices a lot and mooch off of other people.

by the way, the homeless does not need compassion. and handouts are temporary fixes. its the system....that needs fixin.

I think it kind of depends - we have a couple guys here in Atlanta who have staked out busy corners on the edge of parks. They are there every day. I know they make a ton. Lawn chairs, cooler, sitting out in the shade. All the others - they make squat.

When my son was in high school and was hungry, he would play his guitar outside our local Kroger or the Outback in the same strip. He said he could make $20 within just a few minutes. It was illegal for him to do that but people enjoyed it and tended to look the other way and he was just there for short periods of time. He would walk over to Chick-fil-a or Wendy's and eat. I almost strangled him when I found out he was doing that.

Junkies have far better scams than panhandling. They are more desperate and need to be better funded.

It was 5 or 6 hundred over the course of several months. Hardly enough to live on, but it did keep me sheltered during blizzards. Got some food in my belly. Even made a car insurance payment which was pretty essential since most of the time I was living out of the trunk.

The musicians aren't panhandlers in my book. They are performers seeking donations.
