5+ Quake for NZ Near Volcanoes
A decent quake for NZ half an hour ago, on the North Island. One site has it as a 5, and one lists it as a 5.3. This is within the active volcanic field in the middle of the island.

They have had an increase in quakes in the past week or so, and not just in the usual areas.

There was a couple of 5's near Japan, a few minutes after this one. There has been some decent quakes on the boundary in between the two places in the past few days as well.

Something brewing?

Thanks MD, I do check that site as well, as an Aussie worried about tsunamis.

Are you and GD on the north or south island?

90Kms deep.

The earth is always under stress form the gravitational forces of both the Moon and the sun pulling it in different directions.

I have a friend who says if we stopped drilling Oil the earthquakes would calm back down.

It is a big balancing act if you take fluid out of the earth at one point to a significant extent then a rotational imbalance would occur causing a increase in crustal distortions.

Or the Earth is always expanding and this is par for th course from time to time.

Quakes are normal in NZ but not in OZ, a couple of quakes there in he last month. The Melbourne one was interesting had everyone looking for fracking sites nearby.

The shakey Isles is another nick name for NZ.

RE: 5+ Quake for NZ Near Volcanoes
The North Island has again been rattled by a significant earthquake.

GeoNet is reporting that a magnitude 5.7 quake struck 10 kilometres south of Turangi at 12.50pm.

The quake was 90 kilometres deep and was felt across the North Island.

It comes four days after a magnitude 7 earthquake centred offshore from Taranaki rattled residents from the Bay of Plenty to Canterbury, but caused little damage.

Glad you have your escape route planned :).

Yes, regarding the oil and drilling. It is upsetting all sorts of things. Even just the technology they use to look for it, is upsetting the natural order. But the earth goes through her own cycles, regardless.

The Victorian quakes have been interesting. South Australia has our most recent volcanic activity, but Victoria is a lava plain too. One scientist was worried a volcano was forming in the ocean off the coast of there.

I have been to Rotorua, and the burried village. Your country is lovely.

Doom has been toying with Japan since March last year. It will finish them off soon.

We have grown up living on the alpine fault line so we are used to earthquakes, you only start to worry when it hits a 6 or bigger, before that it is all floor surf material chuckle
