Sometimes I take chicken that has to be cooked and I know it's not going to be eaten I boil the shit out of it and then take out the bones ... add a can of creamed corn or two or put a can of corn or two in the blender, milk, salt, pepper, sugar to taste (should be sweet and salty)and bacon if I've got it (add all the grease) ... chicken corn chowder. Yum. There's no recipe, you just cook it all and taste it as you go.

My Mom does that actually. Thick soups really. Kinda like meat smoothies lol.

mmmm, reminds me of the one I make when I do Thanksgiving and we have been munching leftovers for a day to long. I throw it all in a pot; mashed potatoes, stuffing, veggies, gravy and whatever meat is left...add water and heat. Yummy!

I eat a banana and glass of milk for breakfast...

at lunch I take a 20 cents. juice with me from home to a local spot and have two tostadas for two bucks...lots of leetuce on them

at home I eat mostly cheese sandwiches if i get hungry...

dinner is chex with corn pops....

it doesn`t change....

sometimes i may feel frisky and get a hamburger with fries....

on a weekend...

That cereal is no good for you. Though at least it is fortified a lot better than a lot of other grains, like pasta.

cheese is garbage in the States. and I bet you have those on white bread too. No good.

my sandwiches are made with white corn tortillas....

the cheese is made by a friend of mine (monterey jack)....i got him into organic...and he`s making his cheese all natural....

i don`t eat bread....try to keep the gluten count on stanby as much as possible....

Our staple is refired beans....

my town is 20 minutes from the ocean and seafood is always fresh...

I eat chilled seafood cocktails sometimes...they are really good!

shrimp season starts next week....

you can get a pound of good size shrimp for about five bucks...

I like the food here....

Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle-Socrates.

future is doomed?  Wrote:
Hey Jack,

I just spent $61 at the grocery store and I probably have enough food to last my wife, two kids, and I for about a week and a half, maybe two weeks. I shopped at food 4 less and got mostly fruit/vegetables, some bread, milk, snacks, sauce, etc. I do have some things at my house that I didn't need to buy such as meat, cheese, and pasta.

I say 1.5-2 weeks or so because we have been surviving on about $150 in groceries every month lately. Rice, beans, and eggs are good/cheap foods that are healthy.

You must live in a good area. I had some stuff still, but things were getting thin. Nothing to really make a meal out of. A few random cans of stuff. Was getting hard to put a meal together.

Which is why I just went in to pick up a few things. Wound up blowing half my budget this month just trying to pick up some things to go with the things I had.

Ugh, that's the worst ever...looking in the pantry when there's more month than paycheck and finding lots of random stuff but nothing that all fits together to make a meal. I hated it when it wa just me and my husband but now with constantly ravenous sons it's truly terrible.

It also sucks that staples always seem to run out at once and you end up with a $400 grocery bill when you re-stock. I wish I was kidding but it happens more and more often these days, even being the cheap-ass bargain shopper that I am!

RE: $91 effing bucks
I have organic farm fields on 2 sides of my property and the farmer lets me grab a couple 5 gallon buckets of whatever grain he has that year. Wheat and corn mostly. I have found that store bought bread is causing me problems but fresh ground flour and homemade bread don't. Is it all the additives and lack of nutrition in commercial bread or the GMO? Will be getting corn this fall to store and grind as needed for tortillas, corn bread, really fine ground for thickening chili...

I spent $171 on groceries today but not much was food. Needed to stock up on soaps, shampoo, razor blades ($30 for 10!!! 6 months ago they were $20) and other non-food items. I did grab a $1 a pound turkey to cut up and raw pack can later this week. I will simmer down the bones after browning them for turkey stock. I love canning and being able to go into the pantry and create a meal from what I have on the shelf. I also need to cook off pintos and can them for quick additions to chili or to eat with rice or in a soup

It's rigged to cost about the same.

Buying cheap toxic groceries.

Buying value menu fast food.

You can make healthy food that's cheap, but it takes time. Beans and lentils etc, gotta set up a rotation.

But I can't say I felt a lot healthier eating that stuff. It's not really healthy until you add the fresh flavors (ingredients) that make it taste good.

chuckle

Taco Bueno bean burritos make me feel like crap immediately, and for a few hours.

Home made ones give you rickets or berry berry after a few months.

chuckle

Add tomatoes, onions, cilantro, etc, that pot of beans starts getting expensive.

only made it to the first page. This guys stupid. Lmao

Somebody (JIB?) mentioned stretching ground beef for tacos, etc. Best way IMO is to pre-cook some red rice and blend with ground beef, add a bit of garlic, onion, and bovril if desired. Beef will go 2-3 times as far and still have the same taste and texture. Red rice is expensive, but very cheap as a meat stretcher - try it!

Lentils work well as a filler also. I've even had tacos with lentils only and they were tasty. They hold seasonings well.

I watch the flyers and stock up on sale items. And shop on Mondays or Tuesdays when even more stuff is put out.

Luckily I also have the option of going to the states. Some stuff is just getting stupid - the sale price for bacon is $4.50 now so I just don't bother buying it right now.

WNY grocers - Wegmans and Tops - are fairly cheap so long as you shop around, and are way cheaper than Target for most things... I feel bad for people in rural areas who have less choice.

Ever thought about getting a crockpot? You can find them very cheap.
The ones that have the warm/med/high setting work best.

I use a crockpot to "bake" whole chickens, roasts, bone broth, soups/stews, baked omelettes, casserole, you can even bake bread in a crockpot.

I find it much easier to throw ingredients in and have dinner by the time I get home from work.

And I hear ya on the low carb, very good for your health. Heartflowers

Make rice and beans a few pounds at a time and freeze it. Add meat when you have it, eggs when there is no meat. It's cheap and easy to make..
I found a good recipe that is very close to what I used to do, hope this helps Jack..

http://www.food.com/recipe/red-beans-and-rice-72235

I never put potato in mine, nor have I ever gotten it that way from a bodega either.. But other than that its looks just like what I did. Sub any beans you like I switched between red and black beans and kidneys.

Goes with anything or is good by itself.
