RE: A question to challenge the maturity of the posters here...
We were created in the image of God -- both male and female, by the way (Genesis), so God looks like any one of us. Jesus appeared in a different physical body after he rose from the dead. His own disciples didn't even recognize him until he opened the scriptures to them.

If Christ took on a physical appearance to a person, it would most likely be like the one described in Isaiah 52 or 53 (?), and we would see nothing to attract us to him. He'd probably take on the appearance we would be least likely to welcome and interact with. For example, to a bigoted white male, Christ would most likely appear in the skin of a female person of color. Those who only look on the surface of things would never get close enough to have an interaction and become acquainted with the innermost being beneath the skin.

We are all well aware that Islam forbids imagery of Mohammad. I don't know if anyone has ever considered asking themselves why? In Christianity, I do not associate myself with any religious group BTW, the image of Christ is everywhere. Often depicted as a handsome white dude with a nice beard and angelic eyes. There is much reverence within the Christian community for this image of Christ.

If I recall from the Old Testament that Moses was not too keen on worshipping of images or false idols. I think the basis of faith is to look within rather than hooking one's faith onto an image or idol.

Could it be the misunderstanding of this whole image phenomenon is related to the culture of Islam not wishing to transfer their faith to a common image like the Christians did?

This is a very serious question and it is my wish to see more considered answers that will shed light on this subject that will bridge the divide in understanding.

It would seem to me, you would have to condemn Christians or Muslims to say they should or should not have an image of their prophet.

There is no glory in condemning another person's religion, just a whole lot of ego setting up the condemner for a body slam from reality.

Interesting thoughts! Bump

Here is one example of Islamic art depicting people including Mohammed, who has no face in the painting.

It's a workaround for the idolatry issue. If I remember correctly (I went to a LOT of museums to see Islamic Art while I was in college) ... this was common practice in the middle ages.

IIRC, the prohibition of images of any people or animals in art in Muslim countries is a more hard-line and more recent (but not "new" either) development.

And this is a pretty good article with lots of pictures about how the practice of depicting Mohammed and Islamic art in general has changed over time:

That's a helluva control system on the human mind they've got going on over there. Our own government must admire it a little and fantasize about being able to punish anyone who criticizes them. Believe or die.

WTF is a "Lilly Wave"?

Jhikpghf

All religion is a powerful mechanism for social control whether the punishment is in this life or the hereafter.

Why couldn't he have looked like a skinny slope shouldered, homely, stuttering white young man with mousy hair?

I perceive that you are a bigot.

I've got news for you Jack, THE SHACK is a Luciferian book if ever there was one; bumping the above post is stupid.... from a Christian point of view.
I sure hope you are not an actual pastor because you sound like you were merely fooled into thinking you are saved.
You are an Emerging Church process Christian... can spot you a mile away.
Do you realize that the belief system you follow will usher in the AntiChrist?

I find the Mormons and JWs far less dangerous than the Emerging Church.
The Mormons and JWs are easier to spot and therefore less likely to fool folks.

I hope you realize that the NIV is NOT THE SAME BOOK that the Early Church Fathers read.
Millions of Martyrs DIED to preserve the Received Text that the KJV is translated from.
NOTE: Early Church Fathers does not equal the DESERT FATHERS....
they were Gnostics... as is the text the NIV was translated
from.

I have a prayer request:
I want you to pray to find the TRUE Bible and the TRUE Jesus.
Start by watching THE LAMP IN THE DARK.

So, how does that question challenge any one's maturity in any way?
