ASMR - anyone in here having this?
Just wondering if anyone else in here experienced this.
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a physical sensation characterized by a pleasurable tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp, and often moves down the spine and through the limbs.

Most ASMR episodes begin by an external or internal trigger, and are so divided for classification. Type A episodes are elicited by the experiencer using no external stimuli, and are typically achieved by specific thought patterns unique to the individual. Type B episodes are triggered involuntarily by an external trigger, via one or more senses, and may also involve specific thought patterns associated with the triggering event. Both types of triggers vary between individuals, but many are common to a large portion of ASMR enjoyers.

Common external triggers:

Exposure to slow, accented, or unique speech patterns
Viewing educational or instructive videos or lectures
Experiencing a high empathetic or sympathetic reaction to an event
Enjoying a piece of art or music
Watching another person complete a task, often in a diligent, attentive manner - examples would be filling out a form, writing a check, going through a purse or bag, inspecting an item closely, etc.
Close, personal attention from another person
Also this is definirely non-sexual

Yes. Music and film.

Surely there is a folk word for this.

RE: ASMR - anyone in here having this?
Two different things.

Frisson/chills is pretty common, and you can find a lot of info on it. One thing is clear : it's linked to the dopamine released in your brain. Usually triggered by music/emotionally intense moments.

ASMR, on the other hand, seems to be somewhat common but it's quite hard to find any documentation on the subject. But most people tend to associate it to serotonin release. Mostly triggered by close, personal attention, ambiant sounds, calming voices.

While I believe it is possible to get ASMR from music, it's not the most common trigger, so that tingly feeling you get from music is most likely just a frisson. Most people get those.

There was a lot of talk about this on a similar web site about four months ago. Many commented but nobody explained it as well as you. Will mention, there are specific trainings which teach participants to induce specific brain wave states. (Without drugs) The training are not arduous like years of meditation.

Look up "Monroe Institute" having said that, I been there and back again, it's all good, but not necessary. Only our higher power is necessary.

work RE: ASMR - anyone in here having this?
What we need at this point are functional MRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation studies that look at what is happening in the brains of people while experiencing ASMR, vs typical controls. Are their brains really different, and in what way? I also wonder if the same or similar experience can be artificially induced in typical (non-ASMR) people.

This is just another example of how our brains are fantastically complex and weird. How else can you explain the existence of videos of whispering Russian and wrapping paper noise on YouTube Heartflowers

not laughing, it seems to be a common trigger when someone is watching another person complete a task in an attentive manner

I get it all the time. I remember feeling it when I was very young while getting my back scratched.
