After Greece and Spain, now bankruns in the UK ?
Customers with large deposits have started withdrawing cash from Santander, the bank has admitted, as it tried to reassure concerned members of the public that their money is safe.
James Hall

The high street bank also saw an increase in enquiries by worried savers to its call centres and in its 1,380 branches across Britain yesterday. Customers are worried that the bank will be dragged into the eurozone crisis because it is owned by Spain’s Banco Santander.

On Thursday, Banco Santander, its UK subsidiary and 15 other Spanish banks had their credit ratings downgraded due to their exposure to the struggling Spanish economy. The Spanish banks were hit with more bad news yesterday, as official figures showed bad debts had risen to their highest level in 18 years.

However, shares across the sector shrugged off the concerns to rally strongly, as treasury minister Inigo Fernandez de Mesa said there was little reason for concern as “Spanish banks have plenty of liquidity”. Lenders have about two years of funding, due to the European Central Bank’s emergency support.

Santander is Spanish owned, I can't remember the names but there's only two privatised banks within the UK whose shares and holdings are that of the state. Every other bank has derivatives over from Europe, hence why these leeches have set up home in London's financial district and then cashing in the profits to Luxembourg where banking rules internationally don't apply.

Oh and if you ever want a example of bankers cashing in from the public's misery and misfortune, just look at the ex-HBOS before it went into liquidation carrying thousands upon thousands of customers with it.

I wouldn't say bank run, but people I know that still have money banked with them are moving their money out of Santander and into their other accounts.

Satander have not exactly gone out of their way to build up public trust.. and most people I know (myself included) moved their money away from them when they brought Abbey/Cahoot etc..

Puhh.

Remember a bank debt owed == a bank's "asset"...

Conversely, a bank deposit == a bank's "liability".

When one takes money out of their bank account, while it serves to reduce the amount available for the bank to "lever up" via fractional reserve banking, it also reduces the bank's overall liability.

The problem occurs when too many "liabilities" are reduced in too short a time.

That Santander got banks in the US named Sov something . Not rated too high maybe even low but they use to brag about how strong their Spanish bossman was. Use to have "free" checking now now a 500 buck balance. Not average per month but if you fall below that point at any time you get charged. My sis uses them and now they are using her and it's time for a divorce.
