Damnit morons, stop being fools. This is totally normal stuff. Plants shut down all the time due to maintenance issues. I would know, i work at one.
Its no different than a fossil plant going offline to fix a leak or any other number of problems.
The only reason you didn't hear about every little thing like this before was because no one gave a shit before Fukashima. Now suddenly every one thinks its a national emergency every time a plant goes into shut down mode (which is totally normal when a piece of equipment goes out of service, until it is repaired / replaced).

You need to0 study the degredation of nuclear isotopes at unsafe water temps....
This is no simple problem...
if suface temps continue to increase over 10 years , we could be without the ability to produce electricity from these types of units ...
burdening an already energy strapped world...
you might want to re think your position....
this may be the greatest true doom to date...

Operators of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Southern Maryland have shut down one of the two reactors there because a control rod unexpectedly dropped into the reactor core, causing a reduction in power generation, a plant spokesman said Monday.

Not all of them need to have water temps under 75. For example there are plants that operate in Florida where the water temp is obviously higher than 75.
That particular plant was designed for lower temperatures. It does not mean all are, nor does it mean they cannot be upgraded.

i agree with your statement, thats why i showed a timeframe for updates to give people an idea about retrofit...
5 years for 7 new cooling towers...
nuclear certicfication for piping i left out in the engineering estimate for the piping....
there is not enough time left to catch up if we start today...
im assuming several will be closed in next five years temporarirly...

NRC has been giving reports of events before Fukushima. No it's not normal the be shut down because of water being too hot. Yes it is different than other types of plants going down because when nuke plants go boom it affects more people. It is a emergency or else the plant wouldn't have been shut down.

But But But you guys have all been telling me global warming is an Algore led scam??? That the glaciers aren't melting, Greenland and Antarctica aren't breaking up and the sea water temps are fine!
(Hint: it's not hairspray, car exhaust and cow farts, it's geoengineering.)

The more stuff like this that happens as a result of Climate Change, the
more society in general, and the deep pockets of the corporate industrial
complex who denied it, will be forced to accept the realities.

how bout this thread just posted....
pennsylvania hands out potassium iodide tablets to residents within 10 miles of nuclear power plants...
the water is to hot...
better re pin this....
the whole world will be doing this within weeks...
the water is too hot....
i wont say it gain,,,
Why would they only shut down 1 if the water is to hot? wouldn't they shut them both down?
Cause then nobody would have electric there? I guess they gotta do what they gotta do to keep the water cool enough to at least run one reactor. I wonder how warm Lake Erie is?
I've been doing some side reading today, I found out that Perry is running @ 102% power of what it's originally designed for 5% more with the blessing of the NRC and the maximum temperature at the Ultimate Heat Sink"Lake Erie" is 81.5 F so we are just a few degrees away from that here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
6.4.4 Ultimate Heat Sink (UHS)
The ultimate heat sink for the Perry Plant is Lake Erie. Power uprate will not impact the inlet
temperatures of the UHS. The UHS inlet temperature limit will remain at 81.5 0F.
Generator failures at nuclear power plant ‘very troubling’
According to Xcel Energy, operators at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, in Minnesota, were forced to shut down one of two nuclear reactors early Tuesday morning when two diesel generators were determined to be inoperable during a monthly test. The unit is being shut down until the generators can be repaired. These generators are part of the safety systems in place to help maintain plant function in the event of a loss of offsite electricity.
"To have not just one, but both of the back-up diesel generators fail is very troubling,” said Johnny Johnson, tribal council president of the Prairie Island Indian Community, in a press statement. The twin nuclear reactors and 29 large steel nuclear waste storage casks sit just 600 yards from Prairie Island tribal homes. “We have been in touch with both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Xcel Energy and have been assured that today's forced shutdown of the Unit One reactor is not expected to result in any radiation releases.
“Despite these assurances, today's unplanned shutdown - and the unusual white steam clouds released throughout the day during the reactor shutdown - are ominous reminders of the fact that the 40-year old Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant operating a half-mile from our homes relies on aging technology. http://www.examiner.com/article/generato...ng?cid=rss

REACTOR TRIP FROM A REACTOR COOLANT PUMP TRIP
"At 1926 EDT on 8/16/2012, Unit 2 reactor automatically tripped on single loop loss of flow, following #4 RCP trip. Cause of RCP trip is under investigation.
"Following the reactor trip, all safety related equipment operated as designed. Auxiliary feedwater actuated as expected on loss of the operating main feedwater pumps.
"Unit 2 is currently being maintained in Mode 3 at NOP/NOT [normal operating pressure/normal operating temperature], with auxiliary feedwater supplying the steam generator.
"Method of decay heat removal is via steam dumps to condenser. Current RCS conditions: Temp = 547 degrees F and stable, Pressure = 2235 psig and stable. No indication of any primary/secondary leakage. All rods are inserted. Electrical alignment is normal, supplied from offsite power. No impact to Unit 1: Unit 1 is operating at 100% power / Mode 1."
