Android OS: Root, Hacks, Support & News
I find that I have a bad tendency of derailing threads if Android OS is involved (which is not intentional by any means on my end) so I figured I would make a LoP Android thread for questions/comments/concerns/ideas regarding all things Android.
It has turned into a hobby of mine, and while I don't claim to know everything there is to know about it, I would consider myself at least versed in the area. So, if you'd like to root your Android device and don't really know where to start; install CyanogenMod; delete bloatware, etc., I, or other Android-savvy LoPpers, will do our best to assist you.
XDA-Developers, Rootzwiki, and Android Central are all very good places to start, with a very helpful community. Do a search for your device over at these sites:
http://www.xda-developers.com
http://www.rootzwiki.com
http://www.androidcentral.com/
Our very own Kettlnaut has made a tutorial on how to get a LOP-Ticker that pushes LOP headlines directly to your Android device. Be sure to stop in over there and say thanks. Check it out HERE
Yes, I know there is a claim that "Google is NSA/CIA," etc.
Just putting that out there, now, to avoid the unnecessary comments.
There is/was controversy surrounding CarrierIQ which is on just about every smartphone out there - Android, Blackberry, and iPhone. You can remove this from your device: Check out these sites for some help:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=1373967
Be advised: Rooting may void the warranty on your device, assuming you cannot re-flash the stock ROM. However, permanently bricked devices are a seldom occurrence, and in most instances, recovery is an option.

Don't hesitate to ask questions if you run into problems along the way.

LG Optimus S running CM9 (ICS)
HTC EVO View 4G Rooted Stock Honeycomb w/ Sense UI

RE: LoP Android Thread
What is the safest (yes, I know), easiest way to root a Samsung Galaxy 7.2 p3113?
I want to have access to things like /etc/hosts tables and so forth.
Thanks

RE: LoP Android Thread
I have an HTC Evo 4G and I have heard of rooting a device, bloatware, etc. But much of this is so far over my head. SO Thanks for this thread... I will retreat into a corner now and silently observe, maybe I can learn something...

I believe any attempt to root a device comes with a chance (even a small one) of "bricking" it and rendering it useless. So unless you have a compelling reason, you shouldn't mess with it.
I want to do mine so that I have access to linux commands/files that should be enabled by default.

RE: LoP Android Thread
Been interested in rooting both my galaxy mini and ainol paladin tablet , just dont want to brick either of them. I do not really see what benefit it will give me apart form being able to rn custom firmwares. Please explain the benefits?

Is this your device? Samsung Galaxy Tab 2?

Follow the steps, step by step. This is a pretty basic walk-through to rooting, and it's pretty simple compared to some of the rooting I have done.

The above link is a spreadsheet of safe-to-remove bloatware apps. They are found using a file explorer with Root privileges (I use Root Explorer) in the file /system/apps.

RE: LoP Android Thread
I have an Asus Transformer and hubby has a Galaxy. I don't use it so much because I cannot find a word processor for mine that is compatible with Word. I do most of my work on Word, so this is very important. With not being able to have a word processor, I don't use the tablet as much and end up on my Sony Vaio laptop or my desktop for such things.
Is there a decent word processor for the Transformer?

I really enjoy it. You won't be disappointed. I also recommend the Trident Kraken case for it.

This should work, but I have never converted the files, so let me know if it works for you. If not, we'll explore other options.
