RE: LoP Android Thread
That's easy. If your phone is rooted you can change out the bootanimation.zip. You may also want to check out various launchers (launcherpro, adwlauncher es) and the various themes to change your phones look.
Clever Trevor Wrote:DinoDNA Wrote:Clever Trevor Wrote:gutted mate, managed to unlock my bootloader and root my phone last weekend and got Cyanogen Mod 9 onto my Wildfire S, It booted up into that android dude on the skateboard with the blue vortex and didn't go any further.
I re flashed it back to original rom after i got a virus on my computer from downloading stuff. I only wanted to root my phone so I could install a program with supersu to capture my screen to my pc so I could watch my free sky sports on the big screen instead of squinting at my mobile lol....
Went a bit far methinks
Might have another go sometime if I get that bored......
Sounds to me that you got stuck in a boot-loop. If I were you, next time you're feeling froggy, boot into recovery and format your /system (or, just do a factory reset in recovery) before flashing the CM9 Rom. A factory reset will make you lose you /data, but it will eliminate a lot of variables in the flashing. Is it an offical CM9 nightly, or an unoffical ROM?
Clearing dalvik cache helps in some instances, as well.
It was an unofficial romA4 ICS I think, I tried the unofficial but it was older then the rom I have already installed and I didn't know how to get round it. I really want to get rid of all this orange shit they bundle with the phone, especially the shitty boot screen logo.....

This is my first Android device, and I'm liking it!
I was contemplating the thrive before I bought my TP - it looked like a decent tablet to me.
I was real hesitant to buy my TP at first seeing as how WebOS came stock on it, but I do not regret my decision at all, now. Since I like to tinker, my TP fits my niche, perfectly.
Are you rooted, or just running stock/un-rooted?
Stock, not rooted. Waiting for ICS.
As my first venture with Android, this tablet is so far providing everything I need. I'm quite happy with it.
Thanks for starting this thread BTW, I'm always open to education, and with Android I'm just beginning. I'll be checking this thread frequently.

My opinion, though, why stop at themeing? Then again, it has turned into a mild obsession of mine.....

RE: LoP Android Thread
What is the proper way to do a backup?
Before when I flashed my rom to ICS, I used Titanium to do a backup and I also manually copied all the files to my laptop.
Unfortunately, neither of these backed up my pictures/documents/download folder, and who knows what else. I lost all of these files. Now I need to flash another rom back to Honeycomb and I'm afraid to even do it because I don't know how to backup properly.
Any idea? Thanks.

RE: LoP Android Thread
Hey Dino! Good idea on the thread.
I've been using a rooted Captivate for over a year now and really like it. I stuck with the Darky ROM due to the tun.ko and cifs.ko modules being available. That actually is my biggest beef with these ROM builders... why don't they always build the standard modules/drivers in the kernel? There's no reason I can fathom to leave out the standard linux drivers. Debian builds everything even if they don't install them all.
Ideally i think we should be using a crypto-loop in the init to secure the entire file system from unauthorized physical tampering. But nobody seems to want to even provide the modules for crypto on any ROM I've seen much less setup the root filesystems to use it.
Two good reasons for rooting are 1. to provide for installing a custom iptables firewall, and 2. to remove carrier spying/$$ burning apps. For example, google.com doesn't need packets when I visit my own web mail server yet they try to record every URL I open it seems.
One really annoying problem I've been running into again and again is somehow the phone keeps losing integrity on the micro-SD card's filesystem. I mount an ext3 filesystem with Debian armel on it for sshd, iptables, openvpn, samba, apache2, etc. but it will often get totally corrupted and I have to wipe and reload it. It may have something to do with the odd inability of the android shell to read the filesystem on the sdcard. Keeps saying that it is unrecognized yet I can mount it and chroot into it from a terminal app. Weird no?

If I were you, I would make a Nandroid backup using CWM Recovery.
If you want an efficient way of backing up downloads, pictures, etc., download Dropbox from the Playstore. You can drag and drop up to 2 gigs and upload it to the cloud.
Just some food for thought!

Have you tried a different FS conversion? Maybe EXT4?
If I remember correctly, I had similar issues with my Samsung Moment with FS conversions, and when I changed up the EXT, it rectified it.
Have you partitioned your SD card appropriately?

Customization purposes, themeing, rid yourself of CarrierIQ & bloatware, overclocking your CPU, changing up CPU governors...
Basically, a lot of ways to increase the responsiveness and speed of your device, and tailor it to your liking.
However, if you are content with your current set-up and ICS is due out any time, there's no point in trying to fix something that isn't broken. Me? I'm just a nerd..... LOL. It's fun, for me at least....

DinoDNA Wrote:Clever Trevor Wrote:DinoDNA Wrote:If you haven't already read this, give it a read:
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s-all-...i-use.html
Are you GSM/CDMA?
Yea been through all that lol, I had the correct official rom, but it was older than my current rom. I kept getting errors when trying to flash, I would fix the error and get another error, after about three or four errors and about six hours straight working on it I got fed up and flashed the unofficial rom which didn't boot, so I gave up and put the original rom back on.....
I don't suppose you remember what the error messages were, do you?
Anyway, looks like ICS is rather unstable at the moment for the Wildfire, but I read that WildChild ROM is good (although non-ICS):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=1652973
Back to my earlier question, though, are you CDMA/GSM?
Are you still rooted, or did you un-root when you went back to stock?
I presume I am gsm, its a marvel A510a, I got the official marvel EU rom it should have flashed no problems from what I read on the guides. I deleted all the caches and user data before flashing as per the instructions, the phone was unlocked and rooted. I don't remember the error codes sorry...
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Custom roms especially AOSP < android open source project > roms usually remove all the spyware that reports your usage to data collection centers . Like the software carrier IQ thats built into stock kernels. Also you can control the frequency the CPU works at overclocking and such , customizing , Running linux terminal commands ... ect ect
