Anonymous releases source code Norton Antivirus.
After a number of threats, hacker collective Anonymous has released what it claims is the source code for Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2006. The code was allegedly stolen, along with the source for several other Symantec products, after a security breach back in 2006. A hacker group called "YamaTough" attempted to extort money from Symantec in exchange for destroying the code back in February, and the alleged code for the company's pcAnywhere software was released on The Pirate Bay soon thereafter.

Now AntiSec, an Anonymous affiliate, has released a 1.07GB file on TPB titled "Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2006 All Platform Source Code." As with the previous release, Symantec says that it is currently analyzing the code to determine its authenticity, and has told The Inquirer that it expects the code for Norton Internet Security 2006 to be released at some point as well. However, the company has also said that users shouldn't worry, as the stolen source was "old code" and that customers "will not be at an increased risk as a result of any further disclosure related to these 2006 products."

That's a big ass source code file. Would love some security experts to audit it for government surveillance backdoors. Don't think that will happen though.

To be clear; i do not support this action.
What goal do you want to achieve to make it virusmakers easier to bypass the code?

You dupe the people with this. Not the big guys.

Anon had to do it to begin with, and point to the suspect parts of the code.

(OP edit; messed up the title.)

RE: Anoymous releases source code Norton Antivirus.
IMHO, most of todays virii are made by various government intelligence groups. As virus detection is largely by signature detection, the "intellectual property" mainly resides in the virus signatures themselves (which are updated all the time- ie not within the source code). Of course there has to be a government backdoor built in somewhere. There's probably a signature itself to let antivirus know that a certain virus is coming from a government lab and to disregard said virus. Personally I believe in personal privacy and am against the heavy surveillance tactics the NWO Police State employs.
-just me though.

Wrong.

The product falsely identifies certain apps as viruses. Peerguardian was falsely labeled a virus at one time and they were an open source app. Norton, like so many others dictate what is legit and what is not, so help the 'big' guys.

The "signature" for government virii probably looks something like this:

Should I be worried, since my computer uses the Norton Antivirus ?

Symantec spokesman Cris Paden said Friday the release of the source code, in the past 24 hours, posed no risk to millions of Norton customers around the world whose PCs are protected by its security software. "The code that has been exposed is so old that current out-of-the-box security settings will suffice against any possible threats that might materialize as a result of this incident," he said.

Anyone using a microsoft PC is already duped, and probably already part of some government bot network.

Frankly I'm surprised there wasn't a very destructive virus released a lot time ago to wipe all windows hard drives clean.

It's more about reclaiming ownership of the OS.

There are a lot of open source developers on win PC's. Why target them?

Correct. Many of the AVs detected free proxy software as viruses too, because it keeps the users anonymous and big corps REALLY hate that shit. Peerblock = their worst enemy.

Solutions for not getting viruses? Stay away from Windows. The ONLY reason I use windows is because of the monopoly on direct X.
