battle for re-election, said Monday that Rep. Todd Akin ought to step
aside in his bid for U.S. Senate in Missouri after Akin claimed
"legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy. Sen. Ron Johnson also
called on Akin to resign from the GOP nomination.

Rep. Todd Akin made news this weekend by announcing that
pregnancy from "legitimate rape" is rare. He further argued that
physicians had told him that women who were traumatized in such a
way had biological things happen in their bodies to "shut down" the
"whole thing" so that fertilization won't occur.

A legitamate rape is when a woman submits to intercourse out of a sense of obligation, or duty even when she does not want it.

Sounds like something you might think only goes on in other cultures in certain foreign countries, but the reality is that there really are a lot woman in the United States who still do in fact harbour that mentality.

Not saying for sure that is what he was thinking when he said it, but that would be my best guess.

As far as the doctors he mentioned saying something about the body shutting down the pregnancy.
