wall Anyone remember another time in history that this sort of thing happened?
Turkey is not the country that most/many think it is - unfortunately it is becoming far from the Republic envisaged by Kemal Atatürk...

There are no non-Government owned or pawnd free channels left - and of 3 satalite channels that report 'away from the party line' - the owners of two of them are in gaol...

More and more journalist etc here are being detained...

Is this happening elsewhere - anyone seeing this in their country?

Here' an example of what is being 'reported':

Meanwhile, 35 people, including a number of journalists, have been arrested as part of a probe into a number of members of the press suspected of colluding with Kurdish militants.

On Dec. 20, police detained 48 people, including several journalists, as part of a growing investigation into a group prosecutors accuse of having links to the Kurdistan Communities Union, the alleged urban wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Agence France-Presse photographer Mustafa Özer and journalists for Kurdish media organizations were among the detained.

Seven people, including Özer, were released Dec. 23, three days after they were detained. The 41 who remained detained were then sent to the court by the prosecutor, who requested Dec. 24 that 35 of them be arrested.

The Progressive Journalists Association (ÇGD) said that, as journalists, “they are embarrassed to live in a country where journalists are arrested just because of their profession and to live in a country where the number of journalists in prison has reached 99.”

The 35 were arrested simply because they are dissident journalists, the ÇGD said. “We are embarrassed to live in a country where government authorities dare to say that arrested journalists are ‘terrorists, not journalists.’”

I can't confirm that 3 were 'broken' from gaol
But if I find a link you'll be the first to know

Are there more countries rounding up reporters???

over the years I have observed that wounded countries act much the same as wounded animals, striking out even at those who have the method and means to bring them peace of mind and healing.
Such governments should be approached as one would approach a wounded animal. The wise should have the means to stay a safe distance or the ability to restrain the animal before attempting to medicate.

I wonder if the USA or the UK will start rounding up bloggers, posters and website owners - saying they have links, affiliations or sypathetic views for Alquida or the Taliban?..

They already hand pick the journalist so little problem there.

Ah - no wait... That can't happen!

OK, I'll start.

In China and Iran they arrest them.

In Russia they shoot them.

Anywhere else?

Here in the US they don't round them up they just usually kill themselves with their hands tied behind their back and 3 bullets in their head. Or their small plane crashes.

End

To do so would be an admission that there was a question in the first place...

...that would make them criminals in France for asking the question...

RE: Anyone remember another time in history that this sort of thing happened?
It sounds very similar to the Philippine political climate in the 70s-mid 80s under Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos. They and their cronies owned/seized all big business and all media as the country was put under martial law. It was a time of midnight curfews and ambush killings and torture of political prisoners by the army/police. Anyone who told the confronted or circulated the truth about the "high ups" and their misdeeds" was labeled an insurgent. It was also a time when rumors were more believable than the news. The rumor then was much CIA manipulations were going on as the marcoses were accumulating ill gotten wealth.

Having grown up in such a climate of fear then "new hope" in the form of "peaceful revolutions", then a new government, then some coup de tas, then impeachments, people's revolutions1,2 AND 3 and all thru this, politicians stole, our forests, mines and marine resources abused by the foreign bidders who made the best deals with politicos, the poor got poorer, justice died and the rich got richer and society stagnated.

I hate politics and the people who thrive on it. May this kind of political cycle be broken.
