American's are fat and lazy

They do not want to work. Work is a bad word in America

Apple isn't stupid, they know this.

They know that millions of Americans would rather sit on their asses and collect unemployment or government funding.

Speaking of fat and lazy, half of Israel is on welfare paid for by "fat and lazy" Americans.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." Samuel Adams, (1722-1803)

What is the difference between an iPhone and any other smart phone?

The software. The hardware is similar to or nearly identical to all the other products on the market. Apple does not have anything special. If anything, they are behind the rest with their CPU.

And they're having a hard time keeping their sales up with the current prices.

The math misses all the rest that Apple does. Its more than just building the physical phone. You can't just ignore those other costs, because they are what makes Apple what Apple is. Selling the apps is not free of cost.

It would be nice to see these Jobs come to America but it just won't happen as long as Americans are expected to be paid ten times as much or more and the cost of doing business is far higher.

The increase in costs would be more than just salaries. There is insurance, workers comp, higher working standards and the fact that we simply don't have the industry backbone here or the skilled labor.

The real costs of building an iPhone in America would be more than Apple could sell it for without a penny profit. Some estimates are that it would cost $5000 each.

Anyway it's not like it's just America. Every country is losing jobs to China. Japan has lost a ton of electronic related jobs to China. I read a long time ago that Taiwan was losing a lot of tech related jobs to China, I am sure since then it has gotten worse.

As others have stated, it's about competition and finding the cheapest place to make your products. I am not saying I agree, however, that is the sad truth.

if anyone had done any research, they'd know the history of next, and how they got burnt building in america. even with robots they couldn't make it.

sheesh, all this postmortem worship, and they don't know the first thing about why apple works today when next failed in 88.

RE: Apple: why doesn't it employ more US workers?
Assembled in China, the total cost of putting together just one phone was $178.45. Compare that with a sale price (including downloads) of $630 and Apple makes $452 on each phone: a whacking gross margin of 72%.

Look at the OP and read for understanding. There is more to an iPhone than the cost of producing the hardware. There is also the research, marketing and the software. Plus all the offices and data centers. And Apple doesn't get every penny from every sale. What you pay at the store and what the store paid for it are not the same.

Apple does make a lot of money. And thats because they have outsourced all of the hardware work and spend a lot on marketing and developing the software.

Quote:As Cameron knows, Apple is a byword of everyday sleekness. Yet there is another way of viewing the company. Focus instead on the way it does business, and all those iPhones, iPods and iPads aren't just exemplars of design and user-friendliness: they are devices that destroy western jobs. And they do so needlessly, because if the California-based giant manufactured its goods in America rather than China, it could still make profits that would be the envy of every other US business.

Quote:Using a mix of Apple's own filings and industry data, the academics broke down the cost of making one product in particular: the wildly popular 4G iPhone. Assembled in China, the total cost of putting together just one phone was $178.45. Compare that with a sale price (including downloads) of $630 and Apple makes $452 on each phone: a whacking gross margin of 72%.

Chinese labour accounts for a tiny proportion of the company's costs: $7.10 for each phone, which accounts for about eight hours of assembly. So what would it cost to make the same iPhone in America? The Cresc team took the average wage in the US electronics industry of $21 per hour and calculated that the total production cost would increase to $337.01. That is a big jump – but it still leaves Apple with a gross margin of 46.5% on each iPhone – a level that Cresc's Sukhdev Johal estimates would probably still make it the most profitable phone in the world.

So: two models of making one of Apple's most popular products, and two models for distributing the profits. The made-in-America model still leaves the California giant with a profit margin that most companies can only dream of, but would create hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the US to boot. That may strike you as laughably naive, but it's more akin to enlightened self-interest: just think of the way Henry Ford raised wages so Ford workers could buy his cars.

Apple did not become the world's most profitable company (by percentage) by selling their products at margins.

They could incur all the costs of 100 percent domestic production and a 100 percent American workforce and still sell the iphone at the exact same price.........

and still make a profit.

just not the same ungodly percentage they do now.

Th article in the OP, with what many might judge as low numbers, only accounts for assembly here in America. Producing the parts in America would certainly add thousands to the costs of every one and take years to set up. We don't have the manufacturing here for the high tech parts.
