Hi Guys

I wanted to alert you to the oncoming Grand Solar Minimum, the evidence for this, and a preparedness plan that you might consider. This is not about Global Warming.

Currently the world economy is on the verge of collapse. The oncoming cold and the effects this will have on the oil price, the farming sector and the general economy threaten to turn a drama into a crisis.

Increased cold will stimulate energy demand and impact the oil price harming any recovery from the recession and reducing GDP in temperate regions.

Crop damage and a shorter growing season will impact staple food production. Higher energy prices will reduce farming profitability. Some farms will need to transition to cold weather crops. The agricultural sector of GDP will fall.

Transportation will be affected with shipping affected by frozen ports and navigable rivers. Road and rail transport will also be affected. In turn trade will be affected.

Rolling blackouts through ice storms and fuel shortages will leave businesses and homes powerless.

A snippet from Wikipedia shows the effect on the UK of a single cold winter in 1947:

"Coal supplies struggled to get through to power stations and many stations were forced to shut down for lack of fuel. The government introduced several measures to cut power consumption, including restricting domestic electricity to 19 hours per day and cutting industrial supplies completely.

Towards the end of February there were also fears of a food shortage as supplies were cut off and vegetables frozen into the ground.

The winter had severe effects on British industries with around 10% of the year's industrial production lost, cereal and potato crops down 10–20% and one quarter of sheep stocks lost."

Whilst 1947 was a cold winter it does not compare with temperatures met during previous minima.

The Yearly Central UK Temperature Record runs from 1772 and shows a below average trend for the years 1780-1830. This was the Dalton Minimum which the oncoming cold period is expected to broadly match. Compare this to the post 1985 trend line which shows an above average trend. The difference between the two periods is roughly 2C, the temperature fall we are now expecting.

Astrophysicist Ian Wilson's Research Predicts Grand Solar Minimum:

"Also of interest is the forecast for the next few cycles. Ian's data and predictions agree with my own and show that SC24/25 will be grand minimum type cycles and then a recovery is expected."

Scientist David Archibald predicts a 2.2C temperature drop:

A decline in average annual temperature of 2.2°C is here predicted for the mid-latitude regions over Solar Cycle 24. The result will be an equator-ward shift in continental climatic conditions in the mid-latitudes of the order of 300 km, with consequent severe effects on world agricultural productivity.

Preparedness plan offering many cold weather survival methods:

"This threat is not a short-term problem but extends over several decades. Of the 27 “Grand Minima’s” that have occurred over the past 12,000 years: 30% lasted less than 50 years, 52% lasted between 50 and 100 years, and 18% lasted over 100 years. Of these, the longest was Spörer Minimum which lasted approximately 150 years."

Large solar flares are associated with solar minima. A few transformer blowouts will be an additional hazard during colder winters.

A full scale ice age is due...any millenia now. It's precise trigger isn't known although the decent into ice age (glacial period) follows a temperature maximum which may indicate that stored heat in the ocean reverses the warm trend by increased precipitation. It could be argued that we are at that point.

In 1976, scientists at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory spearheaded a project called CLIMAP (Climate: Long-range Investigation Mapping and Prediction) to map the history of the oceans and climate.

They discovered that ice ages begin or end, almost like clockwork, every 11,500 years. It's a dependable, predictable, natural cycle.
Pacemaker of the Ice Ages, they called it.

They drew up a chart of the cycle (above).

See the sharp peaks every 100,000 years or so? Each peak marks the abrupt end of a period of warmth similar to today's and the catastrophic beginning of a new ice age.

See where we are today? (At the far right side of the chart?) We're at the tip of the highest peak ever, teetering on the knife-edge of disaster. We haven't been that high on the chart for half a million years.

And do you see what happened--without exception--every time we got that high on the chart?

Instantaneous ice age.

The next ice age could begin any day.
