maybe not to that specific purpose, but what about richard dawkins and christopher hitchens? their books seem pretty evangelical to me.

I acknowledge that fundamental materialism is certainly not a "religion" in terms of what people generally consider a religion. What i'm proposing is that it fulfills all the criteria that we judge other belief systems by--its a classical template. belief wrapped up in a new jargon... isnt that how all new religions start? just for example, jung's estrangement from freud was largely the result of his epiphany that psychology was merely mysticism re-packaged with scientific-sounding jargon.

Is belief in god requisite for a religion? Aside from casual roundeye adherents, you wont find many people who dont consider Buddhism a religion.

There is always a lot of resistance against new ideas. Also in the past. I guess it is one of the mechanisms it has to be sure science always means heavily tested notions instead of wimps of the day.
The only one I see controlling science in a way, that may be a bit new, are industries. They have patents or the influence media to destroy certain types of science or discovery.

Nope I read it. Science knows of gravity, and gravity is an invisible force of nature, therefor there must be other invisible forces of nature which science must agree with.

Oh, so apart from those that practice Buddhism and claim that it is not a religion? Because I know of no Buddhist who would say it's a religion. I would say yes, religion is centered on the belief of deity. Even Japanese Shinto translates into "Way of the Gods"

Atheism, the idea, is NOT a religion. Some atheists, however, act like it IS, and treat it as such.. There are a few that do that, but that doesn't make the idea or belief of atheism as a whole, a religion.

In order to be a religion, you have to believe that there has been some sort of divine intervention in the creation of the universe. Atheism is exactly the opposite of that, so it can't be a religion as it doesn't fit the true definition of what a religion is.

They despise religion for telling people what to believe
and spend their lives seemingly DOING NOTHING ELSE.
