I am a little biased on this because this happened to me once.

Someone was trying to steal my car in my driveway and I ran out of the house on the phone with 911 and chased the kid down the street.
The operator also told me to go home but I didn't.

I was thinking the same thing Zimmerman was thinking, that I wanted him caught. He really pissed me off trying to steal my car.

I was caught up in emotions and I didn't listen.

Right, I can see Zimmerman following the guy so that he can tell the cops where he saw him last.. that makes sense.. Zimmerman did not sound like some raging lunatic that was out to kill anyone that evening.

If I hadn't followed him, he wouldn't have been caught.
He turned down a side street then hid under someones mobile home.
