The entire thing is fishy.

Hmmm, coal is a target of the EPA and competing interests. Voila, a spill of a chemical used for the coal industry. Only slightly soluble in water. How do you get rid of it? You flush it out. How would you know it's there? They would see and smell it (also used in air freshener) at the water treatment plant? How could it possibly be undetected?

Hmmm, oil in tanker cars exploding like never seen before? Oh that's right, there is a big pipeline at stake to run oil sands down from Canada. How convenient. Oil sands won't explode.

This is pure media BS and manipulation!!!!!!!!!!!

Scream1Scream1Scream1

You're out of your freakin mind dude. This is just a spill plain and simple, I live just up river from this situation and it's just a simple spill…it happens.

Did I say it was not a spill?

It's a mysterious story clouded in lies. I don't see much of a threat. If it was coming out of your faucet, you would smell it. That's the good thing about having a nose and a brain. They still do not know how much spilled, but have created a media frenzy. I could care less if you live in a van down by the river. Wake up and smell the MSM lies spewing forth in this one.

For any chemist familiar with MSDS sheets, there is nothing scary about this one. Check out the MSDS for silica. Check out the MSDS for the fire safe additive that OUR GOVERNMENT put into cigarettes. It is a chemical far worse than this coal washing chemical.

If you are going to throw out insults, at least have a clue about what is truly going on.

Nah, listen to the people that told you COREXIT was safe for the Gulf Waters. Was it?

Anyone got a spec sheet on this chit?

http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/se...DOCNO+2910

Ok after a quick scan this is what stood out to me out of all of it

Monitor kidney, liver, and cardiac function.

And this

Range of Toxicity:

A) TLV-TWA - 50 ppm (200 mg/m(3))

Best information I found on MCMH is scientific America .

Quote:MCMH can burn but only when concentrated and at relatively high temperatures above 112 degrees Celsius. It is not explosive. It is not corrosive (although it could cause problems for things like rubber seals in the water system). MCMH also adheres to some of the compounds in soil. It is poisonous but only at relatively large doses; in rats it killed half of the animals tested at concentrations above 825 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Given that MCMH has spilled into a river this time, it might be more relevant that it killed half of fathead minnows exposed at concentrations of roughly 57 milligrams per liter of water.

Quote:The chemical has a half-life (meaning half of it will have broken down into other elements in this amount of time) of roughly two weeks in water, a month in soil and, if it gets into the muck at the bottom of the river, 140 days in sediments. Microbes and the slow workings of natural chemistry help with that. Its half-life is less than a day in air, quickly broken down by sunlight.

Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts:
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ ... The undiluted liquid produced irritancy on repeated application to rabbit skin. The acute oral toxicity was moderate in rats. Single doses given orally, dermally or by injection affected the central nervous system of laboratory animals. Exposure by the oral, dermal, and inhalation routes caused damage to the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, brain, and blood system of rabbits.

I think it need more attention this is truly bad stuff.

I find it fascinating. A chemical that has a smell about it that folks would surely notice.

The factory not aware of an alledged spill until the media is reporting it.

700+ folks becoming sick and it is immediately linked to this chemical that was all over the MSM "before" anyone became sick.

I believe there is much to question here.

Also from that article:

Quote:MCMH should not be swallowed and may readily cause skin and eye irritation but it is not known to pose major risks to human health and safety.

Quote:In fact, Americans typically are exposed to other industrial chemicals every day that pose far more risk, such as the gasoline pumped into our vehicles. Gasoline is flammable, evaporates easily and contains compounds known to cause cancer. "A fair assessment is to compare [an MCMH spill] to a spill of gasoline,” Halden says. “It's not super dangerous but it's not harmless and it needs to be dealt with. It shouldn't be a long-term concern for people."

Is the spill good? NO
In the grand scheme of things the MSM fear mongering is not justified.
And, the story does not add up.

Possibly 300,000 people affected, 700 out of 300,000 is not a big number. I wonder what percentage of emergency room patients in hospitals normally are psychosomatic hypochondriacs !

Did you read the whole link ?

I was suspicious, because I couldn't find any information all day. When I found this article by scientific America it explained it to me.
