Being 'Born-Again' Linked to More Brain Atrophy: Study
Being 'Born-Again' Linked to More Brain Atrophy: Study

Older adults who say they've had a life-changing religious experience are more likely to have a greater decrease in size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain critical to learning and memory, new research finds.

According to the study, people who said they were a "born-again" Protestant or Catholic, or conversely, those who had no religious affiliation, had more hippocampal shrinkage (or "atrophy") compared to people who identified themselves as Protestants, but not born-again.

The study is published online in PLoS ONE.

No surprise there!

Brain cells don't get used for too long and they pack their bags and go on vacation. Now if only they were used in the first place! Sigh

I've noticed within my family that the more religous they are the more ignorant and less critical thinking skills they seem to have. My mom actually believes all that nonsense about Jesus etc. and seems to have the mentality of a serf in the dark ages. My many conversations with religous and nonreligous people seems to bear this research out.

Atrophied brain cells...? Like the ones you need to bring us sizzling hot reports on what Moo-chelle Obama is doing these days? Brain cells like that? Super-duper expansive, mind-altering, times-changing brain cells like yours, you mean...?

I know... we should all be so fortunate.

Somewhat more than less on point: There are two categories of "religion" appropriately discussable here --exoteric and esoteric. The former is for the less than notably bright-- the vast majority, and the latter for those who possess at least a "semi clue".

Fundamentalist "anything" is terminally exoteric. In all events the exoteric was invented by the scum who own the planet, dating from earliest days, and is total drivel designed to keep the less adept in line. The esoteric, less so

Just because you're born again doesn't mean you don't think logically. I am a christian and I believe in every one of the sciences. EXCEPT any science trying to disprove the existence of life after death. That is the only place I draw the line.

Faith in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are by definition illogical. You cannot claim to be a believer and logical at the same time. They are by definition the opposite.

Then so be it. LOL
I don't see how. I believe in evolution, the laws of physics, the works. I just believe it is all a master-plan coordinated over eons, not random organization over eons.

I understand that you believe in what science has revealed to us. Where it becomes illogical is that you believe in ideas put forward by a book that has been discredited by science. As science has proven the Bible wrong you have dropped those beliefs, that's good but it's illogical not to drop all beliefs from that book. If a religous system that claims to be the result of a perfect supreme being is proven wrong in just one instance the whole thing can be thrown out.

I would like more of your input on this.

RE: Being 'Born-Again' Linked to More Brain Atrophy: Study
Well of course their brains atrophy, they no longer think about anything.

Since christers have all the answers to the entire universe already why think?

Besides that thinking generally goes against faith so this only increases the lack of brain activity.
