Poor People May Be Quicker to Be Kind
HealthDay – 27 mins ago...

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Poor people are quicker than middle-class or rich individuals to recognize the suffering of others and to show compassion, according to a new study.

It included more than 300 young adults who were divided into groups that took part in three experiments designed to assess their levels of empathy and compassion.

The findings challenge previous research that concluded lower-class people are more likely to react with anxiety and hostility when faced with adversity, said the researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

"These latest results indicate that there's a culture of compassion and cooperation among lower-class individuals that may be born out of threats to their well-being," study author and social psychologist Jennifer Stellar said in a university news release.

RE: Blessed are the poor in spirit...
People tend to judge others with themselves as their reference.
People who have worked their way up with no help and all hard work tend to think everyone should do the same hence the little sympathy they have for any perceived underclass.
These people often neglect to realize they had things nicely set up for them from the start.

People who have been helped and looked after tend to do the same for others.

People in most counties think it is a simple act of humanity to help someone out who needs medical care knowing that that person will be happy to contribute to the group as a whole because the group helped them out.

yes, poor people know what it is like to do without and are much more likely to help.
so why did you call them poor of spirit in your thread title? the poor that give the shirt off their back are rich in spirit, just poor in this world.

They are not my words but Christ's.

Poor in spririt (mind?), perhaps, means it is a mental attitude characteristic of the poor -- an attitude of humility and possibly compassion.

It is a positive thing.

Some early Christians called themselves "the poor" or the "the poor ones" (Ebionim).

Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall inhabit their own Belief Territories when they die and if they shall so want they may be able to evolve and possibly inherit another existence which after death they may be able to pass over their previous Belief Territories and encompass something else.

well, i'm glad it wasn't your words because those are not nice words at all no matter how one may try to make them into something positive.

I think you misunderstand their meaning or you are intentionally twisting them into something they were not.

I think Christ recognized that poor people may have some inner qualities that rich folk do not.

You have to suffer a bit before you can identify with those who suffer and feel compassion for them.

If you meet someone who has never been poor, you can almost be sure that they are 100% asshole.

How about you?

Were you ever poor?

Yes or no?

Wow, this thread has already generated like three other hate threads on the front page.

Good going, atheists.

I've really got you foaming at the mouth.

And all it takes is one verse from the New Testament.

Predictable much?

To be honest with you, I'm not sure what I am...but I don't want to thump any books -- especially the good one.
