A typhoon packing fierce winds barreled toward the Japanese island of Okinawa early Sunday, where dozens of people were killed by a big storm last month.

Tropical Cyclone Sanba should make landfall in the early morning hours, between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. (3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET), CNN meteorologists said.

People in Okinawa and along the Ryukyu Island chain are expected to be taking serious precautions ahead of the powerful storm.

The infrastructure on the island is designed to withstand powerful storms, since the island is in an area of the western Pacific Ocean where typhoons are frequent.

But storm surge could prove to be a problem for the residents.
"It's a large storm and it's going to have a fairly wide-reaching effect," CNN International weather anchor Jenny Harrison said. "Okinawa is pretty much in the path of this storm."

At present, Sanba has sustained winds of 204 kilometers per hour (nearly 127 mph) with gusts of 250 kph (155 mph). Its waves are swelling to a maximum height of 48 feet (nearly 15 meters).

Even though it has lost intensity since Friday when it was briefly classified as a super typhoon, it now brings same intensity of a Category 3 hurricane, meteorologists say.

Super typhoon Sanba was able to get all the way up to 170mph wind speeds yesterday. This meant that she was the strongest storm this year. Sanba looked perfect and had even got annular characteristics for a little bit. Sanba now has been weakening and her satellite appearance shows this. She is probably not a cat5 but a cat4. Sanba is undergoing an EWRC( eye wall replacement cycle) which is weakening her. Hopefully she will never recover from this and Won't hit Korea/China as hard. Sanba will still produce destructive wind, storm surge, and heavy rain. People in Sanba's forecasted path need to be preparing for a strong typhoon.
