Roman generals often killed their own troops. The earliest documented 'decimation' occurred in 471 BC.

The Italian General Luigi Cadorna applied decimation to under-performing units during the First World War.

In his book Stalingrad, Antony Beevor recounts how, during the Second World War, a Soviet commander practised decimation on retreating soldiers by walking down the line of soldiers at attention, and shooting every tenth soldier in the face until his pistol ran out of ammunition.

The 1957 movie Paths of Glory depicts a few World War I soldiers randomly selected to be executed as punishment for a failure by their group.

The Mossad agents said they were employees of Zapata Engineering, which is a CIA/Mossad front company that conducts interrogations, and also manages US ammo dumps and US motor pools in Iraq.
