RE: CME on its way to earth.....anyone know how serious this is ?...
Here's an article about it. The link follows. Still searcing for how serious it is.

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) captured this image of the sun at 5:06 a.m. EDT on Oct 5, 2012 showing a coronal mass ejection (CME) spreading away from the sun toward Earth. Credit: SOHO (ESA & NASA)

At 11:24 p.m. EDT on Oct. 4, 2012, the sun unleashed a coronal mass ejection (CME). Not to be confused with a solar flare, which is a burst of light and radiation, CMEs are a phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and can reach Earth one to three days later. Experimental NASA research models show the CME to be traveling at about 400 miles per second.

When Earth-directed, CMEs can affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth. CMEs of this speed, however, have not generally caused major effects in the past. Further updates will be provided if needed.

RE: CME on its way to earth.....anyone know how serious this is ?...
It's not serious. Glancing blow and maybe some pretty aurora at higher latitudes. Here's the run down from http://www.spaceweather.com/

EARTH-DIRECTED CME: Magnetic fields near sunspot AR1582 slowly erupted on Oct 5th sparking a B7-class solar flare and hurling a CME toward Earth. The Solar and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) captured this image of the expanding cloud:

Although Earth is in the line of fire, it won't be a direct hit. Instead, the CME will deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 20% chance of polar geomagnetic storms when the cloud arrives on Oct. 8th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras especially during the hours around local midnight

It looks like you've uncovered a big story, actually. I did a little digging and it seems that lately the sun has been pretty active. Isn't solar activity one of the December 21 predictions?

Here are parts of the articles with their links -

http://www.messagetoeagle.com/sunsolflar...rected.php -
MessageToEagle.com - According to recent info from Space Weather Prediction Center on September 28, 2012 at20:37 TC - G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storming is expected.......

"The sun erupted with a wide, Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) on Sept. 27, 2012 at 10:25 p.m. EDT" we read on NASA's website.

"The CME is associated with a fairly small solar flare that was measured as C-class, which is third in strength after X- and M-class flares. The flare peaked at 7 p.m. EDT and came from an active region on the sun labeled AR 1577."

I don't know if it's the most amazing view of a solar eruption ever recorded, but it probably is. When our friends at NASA Goddard sent us this image of the latest solar eruption today, we just couldn't believe how astonishing and ominous it looked.

So astonishing and special that NASA titled their image "Magnificent CME Erupts on the Sun with Earth to Scale." And in private one of their engineers told me "AMAZING STUFF!" So yes, they are in awe too.

Fortunately, it didn't travel directly toward Earth. According to NASA, however, it "did connect with Earth's magnetic environment,...

RE: CME on its way to earth.....anyone know how serious this is ?...
it looks very unimpressive on Lasco for a CME which is why I wonder why any mention was made at all. But then again unimpressive looking CME's have resulted in spectacular Northern lights recently so who knows?

the Sun has been very quiet recently and I highly doubt this seemingly very unimpressive CME will result in anything out of the ordinary

CME is always on its way.. when there's major disappointment with other dooMs -- CME is doom du jour.
