Here's a simple alcohol stove you can make yourself.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGG-wQJLYbw

This is a good idea skippy. I think you have one .. but it is missing the top or burner part.

I am a huge fan of rocket stoves as well.

I've got that cast iron platform that I can put cookware on. I'm set. Lamp oil burns too dirty for my taste. I'm going shopping for some denatured alcohol....

heat works best IMO .. fuel additive.

I'm betting that works great, but I need the cleanest and safest possible because I want to use it on my stovetop indoors....

Someone correct me if i am wrong, but pretty sure you can use olive oil in the lamp. Just have to wait a few minutes before lighting the wick to be sure it has soaked up the olive oil

I'm pretty sure that will work.... but I'm not exactly wealthy here.... chuckle

I buy olive oil, (I'm out now) I'll try it next time I have some. I just read an article though that says most olive oils are about as pure as most "maple syrups" you buy. Also, many honeys are mostly corn syrup. Such a phony world we live in....

Is Zippo fuel different than lighter fluid?
It's usually all the same stuff (naptha).
It is available in bulk as coleman lantern fuel.

Last minute preps are really bad ideas.

It's the last thing I need. I'm very prepped otherwise. Rubbing alcohol and lighter fluid won't be hard to find at all tomorrow. I'm not sure about the lamp oil.

Roll up strips of cardboard (Corrugated) boxes and place in tuna fish cans very tightly. Pour melted Paraffin wax on top of cardboard until it reaches the top of the can. Let cool. When needed, just light with a match.

We used to call these "Buddy Burners". They burn long and hot so you can use for heat/light/cooking.

Make strips as wide as the can is tall.

RE: Camping-Prepping-Survival Question. Please Help
I have no idea what that first item runs on. I would assume its either a liquid fuel like a lighter fuel (if that interior is a cotton) or it takes a sterno can or something.

That make shift oil lamp is not going to give you much heat. That wick is fiberglass and it is designed to be burnt as high as a candle flame. Its designed to be wound together, not to be spread out like that.

Do a google search and you will see that these types of wicks typically are set very low.

As it sits in that picture, you are going to get a lot of smoke and little heat. You will waste fuel. You would need several them - 5-7 of them in order to produce enough heat to heat a pot of water.

Forget heating that cast iron cauldron, too much metal to heat.

It may be too late, but propane single burning backpacking stoves are cheap - running around $50.00 for a decent one.

Once again its up to the elves.

RE: Camping-Prepping-Survival Question. Please Help
Depending on the wick material in that first one, it might need denatured alcohol (if a fine mesh or cotton like wick) or kerosene (if a course wick).

Diesel can be substituted for kerosene but, it does give of some smoke and, the smell is all but impossible to get out of fabrics, if you use it indoors. You also need to open a window or door nearby if you have to burn diesel instead of the cleaner burning kerosene.

A single burner white gas or propane stove would be better, if you can still get one.

Leave the cast iron alone unless you have to resort to building a fire to heat that thing, then take full advantage of a pot that will be hot for a long time once you get the thing hot.

Be good, be safe and, keep the shiny side up.

Rule of thumb with fuel flame cookers, they get hot. so don't fill them up if they run empty till they are cold to touch. you don't want to have need in a bad weather situation where you have hot container evaporating fumes of the alcohol or combustive element when you light it up again, very bad burns have happened. I use two, if one burns out the other is lit to continue the cooking, when the empty one is cool I fill it. remember spills have flames that can be invisible. do a trial cook off before the need, have a fondue Heartflowers

Thanks, from all the helpful tips I received here, I picked up some denatured alcohol and ultra pure parafin oil. I will be using that small oil lamp for light only and I'm using the alcohol burner for cooking. The cast iron bowl is just to heat up my Chunky Soups. I bought 15 of them so I should be good for a while.
