RE: Cat, 'possum, rat! Cat Came Back!
Well, situation has changed. Real owner just knocked on the door, and has demanded I stop feeding her cat or she will call the police! Seems kinda crazy. The cat has been away, then, because she has kept it locked in her house!
This situation has now become dynamic.
The cat only came back because her son let it out of the house...
All I need is this kind of drama in my life right now...

Similar thing just happened to me... minus the drama. My cat disappeared for a few days and we thought he must have died. Then he showed up out of the blue looking none the worse for wear. He doesn't stray far from the house any more though. He is really friendly, but he gets annoying when he wants outside. I figure one of the neighbors took him in, but decided to reconsider after a few days.
I hate rats but...
Glad to hear you got your cat back.

Well, it is her cat, even if she does seem a bit crazy, and chooses now after 7 months to even talk to me! I won't let the cat in again, but I'm not going to stop leaving dry food outside. This cat won't even eat it; it's for the 'possums, and I've been doing it since before I ever saw her cat!

Some one stole your cat? That happened to me once, my kattus was gone six weeks and came home wearing a blue collar and a bell (I had that cat from birth and the vet could prove it).. I moved house two weeks latter and it never happened again.

No, situation is, it is really her cat. I "stole" it if anything, but only fed it because it was here every day and the real owner has only spoken to me tonight, after 8 months! If a cat won't leave my property for months and the owner doesn't intervene (until just now!) I am going to feed it. I won't let it in again, but I'm not exactly going to throw bricks at it either! Thing is, she may be the real owner, but the cat prefers me. It has only been away 5 weeks because she has not let it out of the house! Her son let it out tonight, apparantly, for the first time in 5 weeks, and the cat made a beeline here.

It looks like the cat has made it's choice then. Now she should do the right thing and let the cat enjoy the place it calls home.

Certainly how I feel, but I will just have to see how this works out. I won't let the cat in, but if it comes to my yard, what can she do? Thing is, she's just going to keep it in her house, and complain to the police, perhaps, but I never did anything to invite the cat here, and she did nothing about it until now!

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat! Cat Came Back!
Same thing happened to me when my husband was away working overseas. This cat kept coming in through the bedroom window and sleeping on the bed. When it realised I wasn't going to kick it out it started half living in my house.
Then the big, mean abusive man arrived at my door and ripped into me for stealing his cat. Thats when I realised the cat was from the really rough looking house down the road. Where I would see the adults screaming at each other regularly. No wonder the cat wanted to live at my house. But being on my own with a baby, I'm afraid that man scared me enough that I kicked the cat out and wouldn't let it back in.
Next time the cat comes over. Attach a note to its collar with some witty comment so the owners read it when the cat goes back.
Btw what are the police going to do? Except resent the nutter for wasting their time.
I have to say, there are a lot of unstable, angry people out there.

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat! Cat Came Back!
Well, I've had the cat come over a couple more times, but no more sightings of crazy cat lady.
If she wants to come on my property to retrieve her cat, that is ok, as long as she doesn't talk to me, or vandalize anything. I see enough nuts working in a pharmacy.
I would like to have that cat again, since obviously it hates her and loves me, but am doing my best to ignore it, to avoid any potential problems. When the cat comes around, I can tell she really wants me to take her in again, and it hurts me that she has to live with a nut who has to lock her up to keep her from coming here, but I just say hello, and go inside and lock the door. I don't want any more confrontations!
Actually, I really wanted to open this thread again, because I forgot to post this picture taken not by me, but by a fellow member of my Christian Pipe Smoker's forum who lives in Arizona. It is either an escaped/released domestic rat, or an Arizona Pack Rat, but either way, one of the cutest rats I've ever seen! Looks like she wants to come inside...

Delightful thread BadRat, reopen it as many times as you want.
How did the cat interact with the rat? Seems like there would be some nutritive urges on the cat's part.
Gotta sleep so I'll check back tomorrow.

Oh, trust me, after 20 years of keeping pet rats, it's more usual for a domestic cat to be afraid of a domestic rat than vice-versa. Domestic rats usually show no fear, so it's hard for the cat to see it as prey, unless the cat is a real hunter, and the sort that goes after everything. I've seen domestic cats run away from my rats several times, when the rat was just trying to be friendly!
The relationship between that particular cat and rat was a little shaky at first, but they were starting to become friends when crazy cat lady finally reclaimed her cat!
Actually, five minutes on Youtube searching "cat and rat" or "cat and rat are friends" would show you what I mean. The most likely outcome is friendship, actually, or at least tolerance and non-aggression. Cats would rather prey on mice, anyway, as rats are a little bit big for most cats to kill without a good fight.
Oh yeah, here's how the cat and Yoda got along: not affectionate, but tolerant.

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat! Cat Came Back!
I like the stories of your menagerie.
I know rats are very smart. In comparison to their size they might be one of the smartest animals. Never had one as a pet, but wouldn't object to it either.
Funny that the cat and rat can peacefully coexist in a domesticated situation. I know my cats and dogs have generally got along or tolerated each other, especially when one is introduced as a puppy or kitten.
When I lived in the country I had a large Persian tomcat named Biggie. Almost every day when I got home from work he would have a different trophy half-eaten on the living room floor. He would hunt, catch them, bring them in through the kitty door and leave what was left of them in the middle of the living room.
Birds, mice, moles, squirrels, shrews, a bat, and even once a ferret. I think he was presenting them to me, because he went to so much trouble to leave them in the same spot every time. He was a great hunter.
Eventually the raccoons figured out how to enter the house through the kitty door, so that little tumultuous chase and herding out the back door ended the kitty door.
The raccoons were a nuisance. Once they got into the trash and pulled out some tin foil that we had cooked a bunch of fish on. They tore apart the foil into tiny pieces to lick the fish oils off the foil. The yard had a million tiny pieces of tinfoil scattered everywhere.
Biggie would sit on the deck rail and watch the raccoons eat his cat food. Wasn't really afraid of them, but kept a certain healthy distance.
He was a great cat. Lived to 17 years old and still got around pretty well.
Here's a video of him when he was shedding. It looks like he has 2 tails.

Funny video. Rats shed too, but they are small and you don't notice too much. Here is a thread from another site by me that pretty much documents my present rat from the pet store up to now, and has some good pics. If you really want my feelings on rats, read the first chapter of my failed book attempt, The Gospel of God's Pet Rat, on page 11 or 12. It's about 16 pages.

Yes. Hopkins is great. I wish I could write a poem like that. He is pretty much my model when I do attempt poetry!
