RE: Cat, 'possum, rat!
I used to have plywood boxes with straw in them that I made for my outdoor cats. Every night you could find at least one possum mixed in and curled up with the cats.

They like Meow Mix too!

i dont mind them as long as they stay outside and NOT chew up my cats.
they have long teeth and will fight them for food.

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat!
Here is a picture by my brother Tyler, just a random shot of a squirrel in his yard (or near it) in Michigan, where his wife is doing her doctorate and he, with a Masters in Biology, is TAing and just got into a doctoral program in: YAY, VA, where I am!

He is such a good photographer. He just sent me this by e-mail. I'm sure it wasn't even hard for him to get that good of a shot. I am just an idiot trying to learn the right buttons to push on a digital camera by comparison.

Oh, they are awesome (to a rodent fan such as myself) but are considered pests by some. Some folks around here in the American South (more or less; Virginia could be considered Mid-Atlantic) do everything they can to keep the grey squirrels away from their bird feeders, but I am the opposite. I put food out for the squirrels, and the birds can have some too if they want!

They will easily learn to eat out of a human's hand, and this behavior is common on college campuses. They also (this is not good) get addicted to nicotine by eating discarded cigarette butts. Well, who am I to judge? Smoking one now.

PIED BEAUTY

Glory be to God for dappled things--
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced--fold, fallow, and plough;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat!
I just got back from my old boyfriend's house and he has an 8 yr old black manx that is living now in the house and outside - preferring the outside (he lives in the sticks).

And this Spring a fox had a litter out in back and they have been living and playing --- and including his cat. He says he has pics but I'll have to remind him to send them. The babys are now nearly grown and the cat is still being called out (the foxes call) and my ex thinks it's just a matter of time before they gang up on the cat. :(

We'll see.

Yes, you do definitely have different fauna over there halfway across the world from me. I can guarantee, that if grey squirrels were ever introduced to New Zealand, that they would soon become like rabbits in Australia!chuckle

The aussie possums and rabbits are a big enough problem already Jptdknpa both only good dead Hiding they do so much damage to the native flora and fauna Tissue as we are a nation of birds rather than mammals it is a bit sensitive to introduced species

Poor damn things. I understand how much a problem introduced species are in Australia/NZ, but think of the poor things! (No, not so much poor things. No predators, endless space to breed in, lots of food...)

I just wish we could all just get along (Rodney King), but yes, introduced species can be a problem.

They are cute, though? Rabbits in Australia? Not to mention mice! Kangaroos? Maybe you folks over there should send some of those to Idaho. Now, that would be a hoot!

Do they ever! Or Alley Cat, a fairly cheap brand.

Oh dont get me wrong they are cute and wonderful in their own habitat, but the possums not only eat our birds eggs they destroy our trees. New Zealand only had aerial predators before man arrived, now the rats, cats, stoats etc all have a field day on our native species Tissue

RE: Cat, 'possum, rat!
A bump to my thread, because my cat just up and disappeared this past Sunday, and I fear she is no more. Must have either met with an accident, gotten taken by a coyote or big stray dog or something, or most likely just went away to die-she was about 15, after all. Seemed healthy, but she was old, and had been sleeping a lot lately. Therefore, I guess I could rename the thread "Rat, 'possum, Squirrels!

She brought a lot of joy into my life these past few months, and I am thankful for that.
