RE: Chevy Volt a total success
http://cleantechnica.com/2012/04/04/chev...h-to-date/

After a short bit of trouble this Winter as numerous members of the GOP and conservative media attacked GM’s Chevy Volt, the Volt has bounced back with force. “The Volt had its strongest sales month to date in March, with sales of more than 2,000 vehicles. Sales nearly doubled from January to February and that trend continued into March,” GM wrote yesterday.

News that Chevy Volt drivers could use California’s HOV lanes, an attractive leasing option in California, a strong pro-Volt (nearly 100% Volt) policy a GE, and some myth-busting and very pro-Volt talk on FOX News all probably helped the Volt along in March. I’m curious to see what the coming months bring.
Last month was a great month for clean cars in general. As noted yesterday, the Prius hit an all-time US sales record in March, as did the Camry Hybrid. ”More plug-ins in total were sold last month than in any month since December 2010, when the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt–the first two mass produced electric cars of the modern era–went on sale,” Green Car Reports notes.
February Volt sales were at 1,023, while March sales reached 2,289.
Nissan Leaf sales increased from 478 to 579 for the same time period, and its 2012 sales at the end of March were 1,733, more than three times the 2011 figure of 452.
What’s the bottom line? As gas prices increase and people see more and more stories about clean cars such as the Volt, Leaf, and Prius, sales are rising. That’s good news for the owners who will benefit from these cleaner and more efficient cars, for those of us who would rather not die of heart and lung cancer, and for those of us who like living in a world with a livable climate and want our descendants to have the same opportunity.

Oooooh car of the year because some rag told you so? It is a poor start for an "electric" car.

RE: Chevy Volt a total success
Uh, not quite:

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/seton-motle...reds-thous

The Chevy Cruze is basically a Volt without the dead-weight, flammable 400-lb. electric battery. Which makes it $17,000, rather than the Volt’s $41,000.

Chevy in June sold 18,983 Cruzes - more than ten times the number of Volts. And that’s down 1/3 from last June’s 24,648.

But that feeble Volt tally has the Press all revved up.

And speaking of the Volt’s ridiculous $41,000 sticker price:

According to multiple GM executives there is little or no profit being made on each Volt built at a present cost of around $40,000. Furthermore, the $700 million of development that went into the car has to be recouped.

Yep, and they want it that way. All this hype on electric cars and shit, why? I drive a 1995 Saturn SL1, brand new in 1995 it had a MSRP of $10,995. Adjusted for inflation that's $16,555 of today's dollars. I regularly get gas mileage in the low 40's - out of my still running just fine 1995 vehicle. Fast forward to today and what is all the hype about gas power engines today? Mid to upper 30's unless you're looking at one of the "eco" models which can get low 40's! So 17 years later and we're still pitching "great mileage" when I can do the same with my old 95 Saturn. Gas engines should be getting better fuel economy, they can do it - but they choose not to.

Already done in 1991. Only difference was lack of government subsidy.

If you have ever driven one, you would be surprised. I have not found one republitard that has ever driven one because Rush/Hannity told them not to. That is the fact of the matter. It is an American Engineering triumph.

There was the Saturn EV1 as well, GM forcibly took them away from owners eager to continue driving them.

A $41,000 battery powered car with a 40 mile range is no triumph. That's called a ripoff.

Lusting for Europe's Illegal 60-MPG Cars

Published December 7, 2008
Why Are Some Diesels Illegal?

Euro-diesels are very efficient, burning less fuel and therefore putting out less carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The problem is NOx (which produces smog,) and particulate matter (which emits carcinogenic particles.)
Read: Guide to Diesel Vehicles

If you crave high gas mileage but aren’t a stickler about low emissions, then a European diesel-powered car will beat out a hybrid any day. The only problem: They are illegal in the US.

That's mostly because Europe’s high-mpg diesels lack the sophisticated and pricey after-treatment systems required to meet the latest US emissions standards. And carmakers have been unwilling to make them legal by passing emission and safety regulations, and marketing cars that are small but relatively expensive.
