Firstly, the issue isn't freedom of speech but funding organizations denying other people's common human right - marriage isn't a special right, FYI.

Secondly, if the Chicago mayor's (not the "government" as you alleged) political platform is equal right for all (including "abominations" AKA homosexuals) than he has to stand for it.

Shortly, you don't support "freedom of speech" but funding of organizations denying other people's rights.

And it is just as much his right as a citizen to fund whomever he likes.

Politicians are supposed (many times don't) to act in according to the political platform on base of which they were elected - whether you like or not. Rahm's platform was equal rights for all - it's not up to you, but his constituents, very liberal citizens of Chicago to judge his decision.
