WASHINGTON (AP) -- Child labor groups say they are stunned and disappointed that the Obama administration is backing off a plan that would have prevented children from working on the most dangerous farm jobs.

Reid Maki, coordinator of the Child Labor Coalition, said the Labor Department's sudden decision late Thursday to withdraw the proposed rules means more children will die in farm accidents that could have been prevented.

"There was tremendous heat, and I don't think it helped that it was an election year," he said. "A lot of conservatives made a lot of political hay out of this issue."

Under pressure from farm groups and lawmakers from rural states, Labor Department said it is withdrawing proposed rules that would ban children younger than 16 from using most power-driven farm equipment, including tractors. The rules also would prevent those younger than 18 from working in feed lots, grain silos and stockyards.

Farms are not interstate commerce anyways.

Farm kids grow up with a great work ethic.
My BIL would get up, do his chores, then check his traps, skin em, turn the skin in for $ and THEN go to school.

I did grow up on a farm. I know several kids who were disabled for life by tractor accidents and grain auger mishaps......but I know kids who were disabled for life by crossing the street at the wrong time, skiing at public ski lodges and even dance classes. Should we put kids in straightjackets until they are 18? OMG!

I did, and yes, they still do it.

I'm not sure why they think a 12 or 14 yr old can't drive a tractor in a 60 acre field. chuckle

My kids love coming out and helping on the farm Heartflowers

my daughter 9yrs old is learning to drive the quad bike, only in first and only in the flat paddocks atm though. But they are quite capable of helping on some of the easier jobs. Farm kids are practical with great work ethics which is why the gubberment wants to shut them down Jhikpghf

Back when there were more square balers, you could stop at any freshly cut and baled field, and make quick cash hauling hay. We got like 3 dollars per hundred bales, which didn't take too long.

When the blackberries were ripe, we would pick and sell gallons and gallons of blackberries for extra cash. In the fall we would gather pecans, and dig ginseng for lots of extra cash. chuckle

pitched hay (no hay baler), milked cows by lantern light, slopped hogs, butchered chickens, helped butcher sheep and calves, drove tractor, pulled thousands of weeds in the garden, harvested apples, peaches, cherries etc, etc., helped Grandma can thousands of jars of produce.

Considering that im an anarchist, and only 18, my view on it is that "children" or "minors" as the state calls them, deserve the same freedom and rights adults have, which includes not being forced to work on farms. My biggest problem though is with CPS and the family court system, which takes the choice out of the "minors" hands and puts them in the power of judges and little pigs called social workers. I know because i have experience with CPS first hand. I thought, how can they do this to me. I dont want to go into foster care. How can they make me? it made me feel like a prisoner. Off topic anyway
