stars Clever Crows
Hacker and writer Joshua Klein is fascinated by crows. (Notice the gleam of intelligence in their little black eyes?) After a long amateur study of corvid behavior, he's come up with an elegant machine that may form a new bond between animal and human.

Joshua Klein is a fervent hacker of all things, including wet, pulpy systems like animals and people and the way they behave. Full bio »

RE: Clever Crows
This an awesome display of wise thinking. I've had several crows that I raised when I was young and noted these behaviors. Crows have a strange thing with shiny objects and will collect these items for some reason, such as coins, jewelry, silverware, etc. If you could train a crow to trade his shiny stuff for a nugget then you have something. Just think of the surprises one would find in their crow vending machine.

It would beat hanging out asking for spare change. chuckle

RE: Clever Crows
I must have looked like someone a crow knew, perhaps someone who raised it from a chick, because one day I had one sitting on the eve of the house looking down at me, seemingly unafraid.

I went in the house and came back out with a handful of cat food and stood out in the yard with my arm outstretched and my palm full of food.

The crow flew down to my arm, ate all the food and flew away. Sadly I never saw him again, but the experience was unforgettable.

Crows and ravens are exceedingly smart and fun to watch.
