Computer OS installation Question
I've got a Sony Vaio Desktop (6+ years old)
My Windows XP isn't legal so I can't install my sound and graphics drivers.

I tried to install Windows 7 from a disk, but it turns out that you can't install Windows 7 if your sound and graphics drivers aren't up to date.

Fine. I f'ing hate Windows anyways.

Can I install Linux Mint Maya if my sound and graphics drivers need to be re-installed? I can do that AFTER I install a new OS. I can't do it before.

Help?

I "think" so. I installed Mint Lisa and it hooked up everything as I watched. I love lisa. I've got a copy of Maya, but I don't know if it can install it over Lisa. Anybody know?
All I can tell you is that I'm not a computer geek, but if I remember, all I really had to do was tell it to go and it did everything. I totally wiped out the windows part of the HD.

PS. I would never go back to windows. I also have a copy of Zorin, and I'd like to try that also, but I don't want to f*ck up Lisa.

RE: Computer OS installation Question
Linux has it's own drivers, and there is a viao package you can install after the initial install as well.

For special keys and such.

I'm not a Mint user, but there are lots of them here.

If Mint has a live CD boot that first. Check it out.

You will probably either need to make a bios setting change or hit a special key or key combo to get it to boot from cd.

Here's instructions:

Thank You. That's excellent advice. Maybe I'll D-ban it first. This copy of Windows is toast anyways. :)

Yes check out the liveCD first, check out a bunch. You can boot to them each and try them out without any changes being made to your computer. They'll boot a little slower mind you, because it's all loading from the CD into RAM, but it'll give you an idea of what to expect after installing them.

avoid the (upgrade)-install at all costs..

get a full installer and erase whatever is on the disk.

Assuming you have backed up whatever you deem important on you machine... don't allow M$ to put your historical data into their dB

freshly reformat the drive and also any crap that Sony left on the machine for recovery purposes... you won't be using it.

sony should have drivers package at their website, however a "correctly" fixed illicit copy of XP should allow any drivers to be installed... that route seems the roundabout way though.

You can wipe it or just format it.

I don't know if VIAO has a hidden restore partition or not.

THose are usually a FAT 16 partition, and can be a little tricky getting the boot partition set up right.

Easiest just to let Linux format it. It's not likely that windoze data is going to cause you any problems.

Unless you have a rootkit on that drive.

I don't have time to look at the technical info on your computer, but You might want to grab the manuals from Sony before proceeding unless you have another computer online. In case something goes wrong. I'll bet it goes smoothly though.

I just installed Maya on my better half's laptop. It came with 7, and is about 2 years old. I think you should have no problem with drivers - they should all install automatically.

If by chance they dont, one of the easiest places to find fast help is once you have linux installed, run the irc client it comes with and it will bring you right into the Mint help room. (or ubuntu help room if you installed ubuntu, etc.) they are usually very quick at resolving issues. Ive seen them whip up a driver for a network card custom in about five minutes.

Id take a real solid guess though based on the absolutely exhaustive base of drivers that mint is built on, it should detect everything and install just fine Cheers hope that helps

Obvious honeypot is obvious.

Honeypot thread to try to catch people admitting that they too have an illegal copy of windows and their drivers work fine.
