No. The answer is yes, the OP can install Mint 13 (Maya), which is what he asked.

RE: Computer OS installation Question
StrataFire  Wrote:
THE most reliable version of Microcraps product, they ever produced, was DOS 1.0 (Jptdknpa )...

You simply bootstrapped the computer, and you had a neat little flashing font in the upper right corner, waiting for your programming skills to go to work..

THE ONLY!! reliable form of OS they ever produced..

After that?.. it was all downhill since..Jhikpghf

I've used many variants of the UNIX kernel, from one made for a mainframe, to those for microframes (Personal computers)..

I've used SCO-UNIX, Solaris, QNX, IOS, and of course the "ground up" developed OS called Linux...

Since Linux is open sourced, the kernel is the only Linus Torvald product that is regulated to prevent too many variants out there in the digital wild, from using the LINUX trademark without his direct approval..

It's not that you could not make your own variant of the kernel (you can, thats the whole idea of open source) and many companies, corporations, and government facilities actually do just that, they design it as proprietorial version of the linux kernel , which legally allows them to remove the attributes in the source code, to remove any references to the word "Linux", and introduce their own, as long as it is not sold to a third party vendor/person, this breaks no legal copyright laws, as it remains "in-house"..

Linux is used by the government, because it's coding can be tailored to the specific task it is meant for, this means little overhead, very little chance for downtime, and it can be updated or even "downgraded" if a new option proved to be too much overhead or not as effective as the previous, by simply either moving the program to the operational side, or just recompiling a single kernel, and floating that one to the other stations as an "upgrade/downgrade"..

The whole arguments over the end user options, is still the same, wither that be Linux, UNIX, WINCRAP, or MUCK (MAC).. It is the "front end" and interconnectivity with the end user that is always the issue here (not the backend of the OS, unless we are talking about MICROCRAP that is)

In windows, the problem is that it puts the CPU into a protected mode (technician service mode in the old days), which forces the hardware to literally "split" the clock cycles of the CPU equally among the input and the output channels, which effectively halves your CPU's processing abilities, and further compromises are made, as when the CPU is in protected mode, the code is executed "one--line--at--a--time", meaning that it is much slower, larger overhead , requires a larger cache in memory (which explains why CPU"s have had to increase their cache sizes in case you are wondering)..

Microcrap has caused so many hardware nightmares, that the CPU had to alter the design, to fit this bloated monster of a BS O.S., by introducing multi-threading, larger L2 and L2 caches, and even more bandwidth channels, which require higher speed clock crystals to work with, and even in the realm of memory, Microcrap has caused a great deal of problems, because the O.S. keeps changing for the worse, as the code jumps from a paltry few thousand lines originally, to well over 40 million lines of code today, the bottlenecks in the memory versus CPU have grown exponentially, forcing manufacturers to have to retool for Hyper transfer protocol, not to handle a game or a software application, but handle the BS O.S. I call Wincrap...

Linux or any UNIX variant, runs in "User mode" also known as "Native mode", it's designed so that it takes advantage of the entire CPU's ability to process information, and the code is "on-the-fly" in executions, meaning you screw up the code, you will get an exception error or something similar if the mistake involves a bad bit category, but Unix variants, have well over 80 years of realized service in the industry, so those exceptions happen far less often then one could imagine...

Not so with Wincrap...

Wincrap would have long since been overridden as a comparable O.S. by Linux or another like it, if it was not for the ruthless, and underhanded (even illegal in many cases) practices of Microcrap, forcing software manufacturers to exclusive arrangements, to prevent competition...

The ONLY reason microcrap is still around, is because of the "games".. and thats it..

Thats their whole premise, one so well known, that they are now with Win8, going to a "cloud" model, whereas you have to have internet connection at all times, otherwise many features of the O.S. will shut down until they can make contact again, and any type of service contract agreement you have with another competing software vendor, is null and void when you say "yes" to install that bloated POS..

It means they will be able to turn off software, features, remove options, and pretty much control your desktop and software/hardware installations, without needing your express permission...

Steam saw the writing on the wall, and is in full project orientation, to completely move over to LINUX, for it's primary servers, and end user software...

Wincrap is so late 90's....Jptdknpa

This ^ ^ with bells on.

I've got a Sony Vaio Desktop (6+ years old)
My Windows XP isn't legal so I can't install my sound and graphics drivers.

I tried to install Windows 7 from a disk, but it turns out that you can't install Windows 7 if your sound and graphics drivers aren't up to date.

Fine. I f'ing hate Windows anyways.

Can I install Linux Mint Maya if my sound and graphics drivers need to be re-installed? I can do that AFTER I install a new OS. I can't do it before.

Help?

I was confused..it happens often. I thought you wanted to activate your "borrowed" copy of XP. I referred you to antiWPA in a previous response.
If your problem is accessing windows update then that would solve your problem.

What is preventing you from installing vid and sound drivers?

EDIT: How can clean install of win 7 require you to update your drivers beforehand?
