What a beautiful old building. CA by and large does not have these kinds of schools - all sprawling one-level affairs. Always thought it would be cool to attend one of these historical multi-floor institutions. Will sign gladly!

Thank you and yes, it is beautiful. My mom and all her siblings and my grandfather and great grandfather all went to this school. At the time Harrisburg was the top coal producer in the Midwest. It's sad how fast things went downhill for the town, and that tornado kind of was the icing on the cake, but things are going to get better from this, I just know it.

Also just a fun bit of information there is an abandoned gymnasium on the third floor. They say a kid died up there in the 40s and that is why they closed it off to the public. doomed

There is also a nuclear fall out shelter in the basement.

Done.

Thank you.

What people are saying:

It is VERY counterproductive that Mr. Smith's kneejerk response is extremely combative.....no one's gonna come in here from out of town and tell us we can't tear down the school.

Maybe it would have been really mature to smile politely and wait to see if the group is able to put any money where their mouth is. They might have access to some significant grant or other financial opportunities that could really make this project less of a burden on the community.

And of COURSE any preservation would HAVE to be done with an eye to safety first!!

I have always thought the High School is one of our most beautiful buildings. Looks like something out of an Ivy League setting. Have worried for years that it would be torn down and replaced with one of the prison like structures that are our other schools. So glad McKinley was turned into apts. I hope it can be restored.

"Given how the new middle school turned out. perhaps they should hire some professionals this time and make sure that the superintendent is not coincidentally building a new house around the same time."

"Harrisburg doesn't preserve anything without intervention. They'll tear it down & build a sub-standard structure like the other 3 schools & the courthouse that are falling apart due to shoddy construction. And someone will make a fortune under the table. Its the "Harrisburg Way"."

The "throw it away and buy a new one" mentalility is, unfortunately, a serious issue in this country.

I hope they choose to fix what is broken instead.

Oh, rock of ages do not crumble; love is breathing still.
