US Court of Appeals upholds right of toll road operators to detain drivers for using large denomination currency.
The Eleventh Circuit US Court of Appeals has ruled that private contractors operating toll roads on behalf of the state have the power to detain and store records on motorists who pay by cash at toll booths – another example of how using cash is increasingly being treated as a suspicious activity.
Having been held hostage by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the private contractor in charge of the state’s toll road, Faneuil, Inc. at a toll booth last year for paying cash and refusing to have a report filled out on them and their vehicle, Joel, Deborah and Robert Chandler filed suit .“Under FDOT policies in place at the time, motorists who paid with $50 bills, and occasionally even $5 bills, were not given permission to proceed until the toll collector filled out a “Bill Detection Report” with data about the motorist’s vehicle and details from his driver’s license. Many of those who chose to pay cash did so to avoid the privacy implications of installing a SunPass transponder that recorded their driving habits,” reports TheNewspaper http://thenewspaper.com/news/39/3904.asp
dude I think this is also a way for them to make money off people
we've always had an I-Pass(I'Pass because we were in Chicago, they work for EZpass too except in some parts of Pennsylvania) in both our cars, it is essential with the work we both did, and is still essential for my husband current job well back in 2007 we switched banks and forgot to update the new bank information on our I-Pass account and my husband drove through the EZPass lane twice----we later got a bill for 1700$ over the shit!!! We refused to pay it, absolute bullshit
And you don't have to link your bank account you can buy pre-paid EZpass's too, but if the money runs out they take a picture of your license tag and you get a hefty fine
and also---this reminds me of something the french police would do when I lived in Belgium. They would TIME YOUR DRIVE---meaning if you got from point A to point B "too quickly" they would calculate your speed based off when you went through those checkpoints, and if you were speeding they would write you a f*cking ticket!
Now over there iirc you had to stop and pay, because of crossing borders from other countries and needing the right documents to do so etc---it's not like driving through America you have to stop because you're driving into another country and they usually want to check your papers. Unless you have a special sticker or something showing citizenship I dont really remember it was a long time ago and I rarely drove I took the tram most times and for longer trips took the train
well said.. There is a controversy in Pa about EZ pass...having direct access to your bank account and automatically debiting your account every time you hit a certain denomination..I think it is $10... and the State not giving any interest on this account ..

Just one more reason among the many that I cannot live in a major metropolitan area.
Although we've got cameras on every major intersection in a town of 130K.
Total information awareness, its like being stalked by a watchful machine.
I walk from my machine.

I don't stop for anyone except cops. Toll booth workers cannot detain me. I paid the toll let me through or I will simply go through.

I've noticed that too. Only the Right will impose strict, harsh rules and take away American's freedom and privacy.
I will never support that or vote that way.

Yeah I pissed off EZ Pass cause I linked my EZ Pass account to a debit card with an account that only holds 20 bucks in it to avoid any chance of monetary loss from identity theft. When I went to NYC and back it cost like $40+ in tolls that week, friggin ridiculous! They granted my access but then sent me a fine for not having enough money to cover the transactions at the time, bastards. The transponder had $25 on it and it took all the extra money from the debit account and the tolls still weren't covered. There's something very fascist about that. And with all the $$$ they steal from every traveler on a daily basis the roads and bridges still look like shit with huge thick steel plates that damage tires covering all the pot holes. What a joke paying over $8 dollars to cross a bridge, pretty soon you'll need a visa just to go to a different town in the same city.

Fixed: Indeed and no one in the government has the desire to stop them.
I wonder how many have desires being on Lawrence E. King-esque child sex parties, they sure seem to love that kind of nasty shit in politics around the world. Then again, people paying with cash or caught with a bag of weed are considered more criminal than pedophile politicians, judges and lawyers.

Do you have any idea how much money the city of Chicago makes alone in just tolls? It's outrageous but the state doesn't get it, the person who owns the highway does. I'll have to have my husband explain but it's someone not in the US who owns certain portions of certain highways and they rake in that dough.
