RE: Define eternity
Just miles overhead is space. Time as we know it does not apply there because, for the purposes of this discussion we are no longer on a spinning rock. From this vantage point, there is only now, not yesterday, there will be no tomorrow. Everything happened today, from the creation of the planets, the breakup of pangea, dinosaurs, our ancestors were born and died. Eternity is now. Now is eternity.

you realize when you sit outside under the stars, that you basically have nothing but eternity over head.
Although related, you're confusing eternity with infinity.

True, but eternity and infinity go hand in hand, one is defining space, one is defining time. To travel the infinity it takes an eternity.
Precisely the point I was trying to make to Aqua.

Such an interesting concept. I like pushing the limits of human knowledge.

Anyone have any interesting links they want to add to the discussion?

ok, lol, sorry chuckle When I think this deep sometimes I lose the basics of communication. Almost as if all involved are automatically on the same page due to some conscious unity. Such a universal truth this subject is. Heartflowers

Does eternity exist? Is it a just a term to describe an unimaginable amount of time, or is it a real tangible idea. Can eternity ever be understood by the human brain? If the universe has a beginning, will it have an end? If that is the case, then eternity is not real. I believe this is why we fear death. It steps our "selves" outside of the concept of time. A concept that we automatically intertwine with our lives, as natural as the term water is to an ocean. Just my thoughts, would like to hear others.

It is not explainable. Once you experience but a small drop, you will never doubt again.

If I told you everything,
You wouldn't believe me anyway.

No prob. Just another speed bump on the road to expanded human knowledge and, perhaps (arguably) more important, imagination.

RE: Define eternity
Look at it another way. The smallest theoretical measurement of time is the Planck unit of time, about 10 -43 seconds. This is the time it takes a photon of light to travel in a vacuum across the smallest measurement of space which is 10 -27 nano meters. This is all the "time" that can exist, the physical measurement of NOW. Past and Future are mental constructs, they have no independent reality. There is not a past, there is not a future except in our minds. We note them as markers of unfolding events. First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.

But since time is relative and the faster you travel the slower it passes, another way to look at eternity is from the perspective of a photon of light. From our perspective we see the light from a star reaching our eyes (or instruments) after thousands or billions of years. But from the photon's point of view no time has elapsed at all. Freaky.

eternity is no time.

If space and time is intertwined into one single dimension, as physics tell us, then how can one step out of time, without stepping out of the universe all together.
