Rio Grande Valley battered by fierce storms

McALLEN -- Several school districts in the Rio Grande Valley are closed after severe storms packing heavy rains and hail reported as large as baseballs battered the area.

The McAllen and Mission public schools were among districts shut Friday and National Weather Service officials were examining damage scenes where windows were broken and power knocked out.

Heaviest hail damage was around McAllen as slow-moving storms late Thursday dumped as much as 6 inches of rain in some areas and piled up hail 6 inches deep at a one site four miles north of McAllen in Hidalgo County.

Hail and heavy rain from the same storms was reported farther north in the Corpus Christi area.

The National Weather Service said a record 4.37 inches of rain was measured Thursday at the McAllen airport.

When there are a number of interpretations, it sorta doesn't matter what you think the correct one is so you could just pick the one you want. Knowing the motivation, context and person that said it could help you pick the correct interpretation. But then you could still be wrong because it could be like an everyday April fools joke.

Personally, I like Mother Ducks missile or other object dodge duck because it's safe.

"Better safe than sorry!" I actually had that as an avatar name for a while at g el p.

Hail froze over in Martinsville on Saturday, it seemed.

Residents on Monday were surveying damage and cleaning up from a severe weekend storm that brought heavy rain and hail stones, some of which were the size of golf balls and softballs. Some people said they never had seen such hail before and were frightened.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued tornado warnings for the area during the storm, but meteorologists knew of no actual twisters.

Still, “I’ve never been in a storm like this” before, said Alice Bumstead of Wood Street in the Northside area. “I don’t want to be in another one.”

“It was a scary day,” said Larry King, Bumstead’s neighbor across the street. “I never expected to see something like that” storm occur in Martinsville.

Bumstead said the hail “sounded like a machine gun ... peppering” her home.
