I agree that in a jit system and troubled economy a major supply shock could spell hyperinflation but how does shipping predict this? Wouldn't shipping be a lagging indicator after the economy halts and goods are not selling? Not doubting as this seems like good info but wanting to understand why to watch this indicator.
If good aren't being shipped, products aren't being distributed so consumers ain't consuming. I'm not an expert on the BDIY but perhaps it means there is just a lack of demand and money to go around from the consumer standpoint. I guess it's a leading indicator because it shows the health of the economy as demand/liquidity dries up before SHTF...?
In related news, I heard the oldest shipping company in the world (around since the 1730s) went belly up last week.
Reading this makes me think . . . This is where they can't hide that they know what is coming. Logically there is no reason that industry should be able to foresee a decline in demand due to an event that has not occured yet. But if the biggest corps know what is coming, maybe bc they create it, then the bdi is a little hint. They pull back on shipping and the rates decrease then the event happens and the economy actually slows. They were ahead of the trend in the market. Very convenient.

Some would say the market (supply and demand) dictates price. I tend to agree with your point, that the corporations literally control the market and the price. This is what globalization, monopolies, and the corporate-state structure have done to free-market capitalism. With the resulting ability to create and control the reality of the global economic system. So as you say, they know what is coming, they create what is coming, and they intend to profit from what is coming.
The last remaining wealth, value, and power will be removed from the hands of the poor, the workers, the middle class and handed to the elite, the bankers, the corporatists.
Why would they do this? The current system is already set-up to bring in maximum profits with minimal risk. They've got a great game going, why risk collapse with the outrageous, dangerous ponzi schemes, hubris, and fiscal idiocy? The scenarios/reasons that I can attribute are
1. They know about some catastrophe that will occur soon (Space, Solar, Earthquake, meteorite, plague, etc. doom).
2. A plan by globalists to collapse it all and start from scratch (phoenix plan).
3. Greed, arrogance, and idiocy which is a factor - which seems to be a convenient tool used on underlings to achieve ends, more than the overall explanation.
Security, food and water will be the currency of survival for awhile - if this global collapse setup is continued to its conclusion.
