Ecuador's embattled media
While "Correa is committed to the defense of freedom of expression for Assange," said political analyst and former education minister Vladimiro Alvarez, "he doesn't respect it in Ecuador."

"His government is pressuring the media and attacking journalists who challenge his politics."

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists has accused Correa of shutting down critical radio stations, passing laws to restrict campaign coverage ahead of February 13 elections and using state media to bully critics.

"Correa's press freedom record is among the very worst in the Americas, and providing asylum to the WikiLeaks founder won't change the repressive conditions facing Ecuadoran journalists who want to report critically about government policies and practices," the group said on its website.

He waged a long legal battle with the opposition El Universo newspaper over an article accusing Correa of "crimes against humanity" in his response to a 2010 police mutiny, violence that left 10 dead and 274 wounded.

A court sentenced the paper's three top executives and former opinion page editor -- all of whom have sought asylum outside the country -- to three years in prison, and awarded Correa $40 million in damages for libel.

Correa pardoned the three in February after an outcry by human rights and media freedom groups, and he pardoned two other reporters sentenced to pay him $2 million over a book on his brother's public contracts.

That is because the police were funded by American corporate interests to maintain the corruption in Ecuador.

Sad to see Julian Assange supports condone Ecuador.

Why aren't they as interested in human rights of Ecuadorians as the are westerners?

Extradition to Belarus

Alexander Barankov, a Belarusian former army captain, faces extradition to Belarus at that government’s request, despite Ecuador having previously awarded him refugee status.

Alexander Barankov is languishing in a Quito jail awaiting extradition to Belarus simply for writing a blog detailing corruption in the former Soviet country and angering its dictator, Alexander Lukashenko.

Mr Correa reportedly took action against Barankov on the personal request of Lukashenko when the latter came visiting recently.

RE: Ecuador's embattled media
Emilio Palacio, a journalist for the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, was sentenced to three years in prison for criminal defamation of Rafael Correa's government on July 20, 2011.

"The criminal conviction of the president's critics is a major setback for free speech in Ecuador," said José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. "Punishing a journalist and directors of a newspaper for ‘offending' the president is likely to have a very negative impact on the news media and public debate in Ecuador."

You should speak out about human right abuses wherever they happen.

It would be nice to hear Assange say something about it..as he is suppossed to be a human rights campaigner.

The media would still focus on him.

Besides, Britain has criminals that they won't extradite, why aren't they discussed?

none of this is really about rape or human rights. The fact that either are brought up is like saying the war in Iraq was because of 911. By arguing about the rape aspect or the human rights shows that the real point has been lost. Its only about the leaked us cables. It always was.

As expected, Julian Assange doesn't care about people in South America.

Shame.

Jesus, the abuses he listed are already happening in those countries he named.

Red, don't take this the wrong way, but you sound like a mouth price for the msm. I appreciate that there are human rights breaches in Ecuador, as other are in most countries, either for and by that country, or for other countries, but the human rights abuses aren't the issue, that is a distraction.

The issue is wiki leaks and America.
