What exactly is EGO?

It's a serious question. I'm not sure that I know.

Ego is like a little child that acts like a spoiled brat when inflated to a size bigger than it can handle, while society feeds it as it wishes fat consumers. Ego is more like a given tool, that just like fear, needs to be handled with respect, but respect and society don't seem to mix very well.

I don't know maybe I have it wrong.

I always thought my ego was the little voice that always tries to screw with me.

Why did he just say that?

Screw them.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of it that's for sure.

Ego is I-ness and my-ness.

Yogis, buddhists and much eastern phlosophy see the ego as an obstacle to inner peace because ego is bound into desire. Desire to have more, have better, comparisons to others etc.

Destroy the ego (so to speak) and cultivate acceptance, then inner peace is easier.

In India they talk about the subtle ego of priests and ascetics, a sort of humbler than thou mentality.

I have met egoless people and they emanate good feelings, their selflessness is astonishing. But it doesn't mean they are not human. One Swami I met was so lazy, happily admitted it, accepting his flaws but so giving at the same time.

Honestly, I don't take my or your ego seriously and neither should you.

The basics of what we generally call ego are simple. It is fundamentally predictive mental programming. For most people it is the default mode of thinking, acting and reacting in the world. It has no physical reality. It is merely patterns of thought, ruts in your neural pathways. Lost in thought we identify it at ourselves and it is in control. Aware of our thoughts, that is to say, thinking about what is you are thinking about, and it ceases to be you.

Enlightenment in the case of the ego simply means to bring light to bear. What is the light? Awareness. Or put another way, lucidity.

Staying lucid, completely present, in our everyday lives is a challenge for most of us. Cruise control is so much easier. Provide a bit of space for thoughtful action. Stick to the view from the balcony and it's easier to enjoy the performance, both your own and others'.

There is a Buddhist saying that the ego is a dew drop, clinging to a leave while it slowly starting to fall in the water. Easy to talk to be humble, deflating the ego but letting go is the hardest part. It's form may be annihilated when it hits the water, but the contents do still exist.
