Egypt Cuts Off Gas Supply to Israel - Supplied 40%

Israel's Key Energy Provider, Egypt, Cuts Off All Gas Supplies

Egypt just announced that it is cutting off its natural gas supplies to Israel, which just so happens relies on Egypt for 40% of its energy needs.

Report: Egypt cancels deal to supply gas to Israel

From: JPost.com - Headlines - 2:22pm - April 22, 2012

The Egyptian government Sunday informed Egyptian Mediterranean Gas (EMG), the company which provides natural gas to Israel, that it was unilaterally cancelling the deal to supply Israel with the natural resource, Globes reported.

Supplies 40%, that is a big cut.
Alternate sources for natural gas?

RE: Egypt Cuts Off Gas Supply to Israel - Supplied 40%
"Israeli officials have said the country was at risk of facing summer power outages due to energy shortages...

The Egyptian decision is a potential blow to the country's ties with Israel, already tested by the toppling of Israeli ally President Hosni Mubarak a year ago.

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz's office responded to the reports Sunday saying he views the Egyptian move "with great worry," both from a diplomatic and economic standpoint.

The move, Steinitz's office added, is a "dangerous precedent that darkens the peace treaties and the atmosphere of peace between Israel and Egypt." In response, Israel must make an extra effort to overcome any obstacles to getting Israel's own gas fields flowing this year as opposed to its scheduled operational start in 2013, a statement added."

Israel supplies 70% of the PA's power without getting paid.

Do you think they will still give power to the Palestinians if they can't generate enough for themselves?

Egypt cancels natural gas deal with Israel

Egypt's national gas company EGAS announced Sunday that it will be cancelling its natural gas supply deal with Israel.

Ampal-American Israel Corporation, a partner in the East Mediterranean Gas Company (EMG), which operates the pipeline, said the Egyptian companies involved had notified EMG they were "terminating the gas and purchase agreement."

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz’s office responded to the news on Sunday, saying that, the finance minister was "very worried" about the cancellation of the gas deal with Israel, "both in political and in economic terms."

"This is a dangerous precedent that threatens peace deals and the atmosphere of peace between Egypt and Israel,” the minister's office said.

Opposition leader Shaul Mofaz said also responded on Sunday that the cancellation was an unprecedented low point in relations between Egypt and Israel. “This is a blatant violation of the peace treaty,” he said. “This unilateral step requires an immediate American response,” as the U.S. was present at the signing of the Camp David Accords.

This is the most important part of the article. It potentially means war with Turkey and involve Cyprus as well.

Because the people of Egypt are demanding it and they already blew up the pipeline 17 times since Mubarak was deposed.

Crap flows downhill with authoritarian tyrannical regimes, so I would guess the Palestinians might be the first to suffer, if history is an indicator of current and future trends.
I am sure everyone in the territory will be paying higher prices with shortages in the near term.
Anything that causes harm or more tension is concerning.

Thanks for filling in the picture more clearly.
Natural resources are integral to understanding geopolitics and motivations for aggression and conflict.

Because no one gains from Israel dominance of the area except for the USA, the Egyptians obviously know this.

I've know that a significant portion of the electricity in Gaza comes from Israel. I have been looking but can't seem to find a source that says that it isn't being paid for.

New blast hits Egypt gas pipeline to Jordan, Israel
By REUTERS

Attack is the 14th to hit Sinai since Mubarak's fall; pipeline remains closed from similar explosion in February.
http://www.jpost.com/MiddleEast/Article.aspx?id=265351

I don't know if it is not secure enough, or there is some other explanation why these pipelines are being damaged so often.
Seems that the unrest in Egypt is the popular explanation, rarely is there a claim of responsibility.
