An Essex County couple comes home to find their livestock mauled to death.

Two dogs are suspected of getting onto Upright Alpaca Farm and killing nearly a dozen alpacas.

In all, 15 alpacas were attacked, 11 were mauled to death, two are hospitalized and two are recovering at home.

When Abbey Gauvin left home Saturday afternoon all 15 of her alpacas were healthy and happy.

But when she returned home Sunday morning she encountered a gruesome sight.

"There was a mother over there her head was twisted around. Her face was completely ripped off and she was dead on arrival," Gauvin explained.

Gauvin says she also discovered two of her neighbor's pit bull dogs in her yard.

"We found the dogs here in the corner - wagging their tails with blood on their mouths," Gauvin added.

IMHO, there isn't punishment enough that can be exacted upon the owner of those vicious dogs. Hopefully whatever judge hears this case will not adopt the stance of 'You can't get blood from a turnip' with the owner of the dogs and will instead have any and all tax refunds, and any and all gov benefits witheld from them until at least the Alpaca's owner is repaid from them for expenses, even if it dooms that dog owner to a life of impoverishment.

This makes me sad, I have eight alpacas and they are so light and fragile they dont stand a chance against large dogs ( they will break the backs of smaller dogs and foxes with their feet like a deer will, but not large dogs).

Alpacas also dont have much of a will to fight a bit if they are hurt or unwell, they need a huge amount of nursing if they become injured (I know of people that have had them by the fire inside).

Poor things.

If the dogs' owners balk they need to do a DNA on the stomach contents NOW and at the very least the dogs need to be killed.

I've seen my own sheep chewed to the bone and still alive. It is a sight that never leaves you.

Dogs like that get shot around here, pure and simple.

I had no idea you kept alpacas, you are very fortunate!

I hate to say so, but yes. We keep guns handy and I won't hesitate to use them were our animals attacked.

you're suppose to put a llama in a pen with alpacas as the llamma will protect the whole herd of alpacas from cougars and bears, and would smash pitbull skulls very easily
