Yes but an empath with experience is a force to be reckoned with, they can very quickly feel out a sociopath. A sociopath is a passing fascination to an empath as an observation also but for different reasons.

Jhikpghf I sooooo agree with this. However, this doesn't just apply to sociopaths. We can recognize toxic people, in general. It took me a few times of being emotionally annihilated by some of these folks. Now, I can sniff them out almost instantly. From the sociopaths to the narcissists to the damaged souls who just can bring themselves to seek help and heal (I have a soft spot for these types)... and boy, do I attract all of these types on a regular basis. My sniffer is so sensitive that it makes finding good friends a bit difficult. I'm also an HSP, which is a common trait for an empath... so I can usually sense when someone doesn't like me on the first meeting. Wreaks havoc on friend finding. Tissue And... we tend to spend a lot of time researching the woes of the world, and subsequently place a huge burden on our shoulders that we cannot possibly alleviate alone, which leads to chronic depression. I am forever a problem solver, mediator, compassion filled soul who literally hurts when I see others hurting. It's an ongoing struggle that I am happy to take on. Don't get me wrong... we need all types of folks in this world to survive and thrive. I appreciate all of the ones who don't go out of their way to hurt others. Having said that, I'm glad to be so compassionate and sensitive. It reminds me that I'm alive and kicking when I get down. I'm still trying to work with it in a more positive light, but slowly getting there.

Great post, OP. Happy, happy holidays to all of you here at LOP. Xmas_ani

Exactly.

I don't believe psychopaths seek out empaths so much as those with low self esteem who let others walk all over them. The two don't necessarily equate.

Statistically. people who are defined as empathetic are more likely to have been raised in an abusive household or to have experienced prolonged abuse. Empathy increased the likelihood of avoiding punishment. So while some have suggested that sociopaths are attracted to empaths, the opposite is also likely true

Sociopaths goals are to get the empath to reach a boiling point, a "tipping point" if you were, where negative emotions come up and used to confront the sociopath, this makes them "think" that they now know you and are able to control your emotional states...

Thing is, the sociopaths are very childish, and lack any kind of central balance, they will ALL burn out, it's just watching out that they do not take you with them is the key issue...

They feed off of negative emotions, not wisdom or positive emotions, they like to think that the world is theirs, and that we are here only to serve them..

it's neither

they search out energy, more so those full of life

they can manipulate anyone including the so called empaths here and wherever

There are certain kinds of empaths. Capable ones, meaning those that are skilled because of their ability and ones yet to realize they are. Another type may also have been traumatized and/or become self realized which may be a form of positive trauma, this type will always right themselves. A sociopath may see a usefulness in any number of these combinations.

Some empaths are loners for a reason.

An empath can present a false target for a sociopath. You know how they bite and what they bite on. This is how an empath can conserve their own energy.

Great OP and some fab replies - have not read them all, but will. I am highly empathic and am attempting to extract myself from a ten year on-and-off relationship with an extreme NPD (maybe psychopath). I recognize the attraction no matter how perverse. The empath seeks to understand the narcissist, and perhaps, in the very painful end, gains control of the situation. I hope!!! The damage wraught by these relationships can be severe, even fatal. Detach and keep your energies up. It is a matter of survival. Look forward to more that you have to offer Sofia.

i had a sociopath in my life

she was awesome in many ways…

but when i got rid of her she realized she needed my energy more than i needed hers

she tried in vain to get back in my life in any way.

that girl was cursed. no matter how hot she was she was a bane to her own existence and preyed on my kindness

good riddance

they get worse...body counts don't matter after a while...pretty scary and sickening stuff

and btw, any empath claiming to be ready or good enough to combat...you sound just a bit too self centered

Good observations.

I think they get satisfaction out of being angry and creating a target
to unload that anger on.

They thrive on divorce settlements, lawsuits, and positions of power.
-They seek out altruists, since they can document the 'promises' altruists
verbally make out of sympathy for the sociopath's plight.

They have no sense of moral limits.

If you suspect that a person is a sociopath, then find out how many
'settlements' they have won. The sociopath's first lesson in life is how
to document their 'list' of grievances. That might be against a little
brother, then against schoolmates, then they are ready for the big-time.

By documenting,,, that is any written, or witnessed action on the
part of their target. It could be teachers, principals, co-workers, clergy,
and especially police- since police write up reports.

The sociopath carefully builds a case.
