horn Experienced storm Prep Assistance Needed, Please
Hi.

I am in the area where Sandy may do some damage.

I am going grocery.shopping tomorrow (as usually do on Fridays) and would like to know some ideas on foods to get should we loose power.

We do have a grill, but can't afford expensive meats (steaks).

What adds to this "challenge" is that we have 3 young children.

So, please, any ideas on foods/meals that either meet on or all of the below:

*can be eaten with no heat
*can be stored with no refrigeration
*can be cooked on a grill

Thanks in advance. I'm not dooming it up, btw however I do have children to think about and after loosing power last year in the freak snowstorm, I don't want to tale any chances.

Stay safe out there!

You can boil water.. so most things can be made.

Beef jerky can be added for stews if the power has been out for a long time.
Cans of spegetios(sp) and such for the kids .. but it shouldn't be too had just do not buy from the fridges or freezers.

Mac and cheese with evaporated milk.

Wait get BBq briqutes and propane for the grill.

After you have no power throw a block party and BBQ everything that is in everybodys freezers.. that alone should last a couple to a few days. after you get tired of sweating like a pig after the first week get ready for the flies, they will be everywhere and the air will come to a dead standstill right after the storm, So, lawn chairs.. and Those frigging candles to hold the bugs at bay..

Sta out of the fridge, it will stay cold for days and days if ya dont go in there.

Its pretty much a week long, maybe two week long party..

(Hurricane experience here cammi)

At night wet a sheet and drape it over ya to stay cool and the mosquito wont get you.

I say grill bc we run on electricity here, so power goes out, no gas to cook indoors.

No skeeters to worry about here... I live in MD. Like I said, not sute what to expect, just want my kids to be safe and happy ;)

Get some cheap cuts of meat (Iron, skirt or flank steaks), do a chili or a stew, some onions and garlic and a can or two of tomato's can feed a family of four (if you plan it right) for several days.
1st day = Chili
2nd day = Burrito's (add some cheese and sour cream)
3rd day = Nachos ( add a Jalapeno pepper)
4th Day = Tortilla soup

Just get inventive .......

(We use propane grills everywhere here for BBQing. is what i meant, if ya only got a regular can style to cook in, forego getting any real food and just get stuff to cook with, trust me there will be more then you can eat if its anything like what you think it might be.. everybody will be eating BBQ.

people will start dropping stuff off just so it gets eaten.
