Forced Volunteerism Day
Today is my company's Forced Volunteerism Day (that's not what THEY call it).

Project ideas are submitted by employees, approved, then we all must sign up for a project by a deadline (if we don't do that fast enough, we get a friendly email reminder every day until we do :-)).

If we choose not to participate or can not participate for any reason, we must take 4 hours of PTO - we may not work unless we are considered mission critical for that time period and that is approved from the top.

We must wear our Forced Volunteerism Day shirts which are issued when we first participate as hew hires. If we lose, destroy or no longer fit into our shirts, shirts are available for purchase for $6.40. We must have our shirt orders in two weeks in advance in order to participate.

We are to report to the location designated by our volunteer team lead for lunch (paid for by the company up to a N dollar limit (not sure what it is this year)) and then on to our respective volunteer sites where we must volunteer for 4 hours.

Any deviation from the above results in the forfeiture of 4 hours Paid Time Off. There will be lots of pictures. We may wear jeans to work that day ONLY if participating.

Happy Forced Volunteerism Day!

(So, LOP, is this a good thing or a bad thing for a public corporation?)

I'd like to know what your company calls it.

Sounds like the military. Difference is, the military owns you, and the corp doesn't. Not sure that is legal...

Yes - everyone must participate and does.

There are more favored projects.

For example, the project that fills up the fastest is volunteering on a battleship museum. You get the $15 tour for free and then dust off some stuff in the ship.

The part about having to take paid time off if you choose to participate is VERY iffy to me, as well.

Forced to volunteer.... Yes, they do not mind evoking a paradox to make it seem less like a slave task.

Seems flaky to me.
Especially the part about the shirts.

Jhikpghf

The part about the shirts is 100% pure cheapstakedness. Don't want to have to buy more than one shirt for an employee over their tenure.

Tell me about it.

It's a marketing thing, though.

100% marketing.

RE: Forced Volunteerism Day
Doesn't Whole Foods force its employees to volunteer a minimum number of hours per year? I don't think it's all that uncommon any more for corporations to force their employees to volunteer. The volunteering improves the image of the corporation, making the company look good to local communities and share holders.
