Another one to add to the growing list.....

It sounds a lot like the Asteroid 2012 DA14..... Are they the same?

The current record holder for longest tail length is the Great Comet of 1843, which had a tail that extended for more than 250 million kilometers. If the comet's nucleus were placed at the center of the Sun, the comet's tail would have extended beyond the orbit of Mars.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Comet_of_1843

The orbital period of this comet is given as 742 years... er, 2585.

Interesting that Wikipedia says 742 years while the concensus in the 1800's was 170 years.....

The comet is a member of the Kreutz Sungrazers. Henrich Kreutz computed the new orbit in 1901.

Joseph Stillman Hubbard the astronomer was a highly reputable mathematician. It's odd that he could be so far out in his calculations. It's a bit of a mystery.

The comet is a member of the Kreutz Sungrazers. Henrich Kreutz computed the new orbit in 1901.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kreutz_Sungrazers

-"An alternative suggestion was that the comets were all fragments of an earlier sun-grazing comet.[1] This idea was first proposed in 1880, and its plausibility was amply demonstrated when the Great Comet of 1882 broke up into several fragments after its perihelion passage.[4] In 1888, Heinrich Kreutz published a paper showing that the comets of 1843 (C/1843 D1, the Great March Comet), 1880 (C/1880 C1, the Great Southern Comet), and 1882 (C/1882 R1, Great September Comet) were probably fragments of a giant comet that had broken up several revolutions before.[1] The comet of 1680 proved to be unrelated to this family of comets." -Wikipedia

It makes sense... I wonder if this DA14 asteroid is part of the comet that broke up?

Mystery? I see you give Wikipedia the full credit and question Hubbard.....

I went tonight and watched for them and saw about 5. It was a prime time for space dust in the eastern skies. This comet however is a different story.... What are the real numbers and why?

It sounds like it was re-found as C/2011 L4 ( PanSTARRS ) which is already 3 times brighter than predicted and due to arrive in March...... Maybe daytime visible.
