Hey, you know it!! I have to wait for the sun to clear my oak trees to get some good pix. They will be coming up shortly.

Your garden is farther along than mine. Unusually cool wet weather has kept mine from growing and I lost the first planting of peppers and tomatoes to a frost two weeks ago. Still I've been eating killer salad greens, bok choi, swiss chard, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, strawberries and radishes.

I would suggest if you continue to have droughty conditions you invest in some drip tape instead of the overhead oscillating sprinklers. It saves a lot on water costs and really cuts down on weeds. You can also plant closer together to conserve moisture even more.

Also mulch the heck out of it, I use the neighbors sheep and horse urine soaked pine shavings for mine. They bring over about 15 yards at a time.

As Arnold has said so succinctly...'I'll be back'...chuckle

Omega,

Here ya go-the annual "Garden Up" thread. Having a tough time-severe drought -worst I've ever seen in Central Texas. Water bill is kicking my ass.

I think you might be getting too much evaporation from that type sprinkler.

something I noticed on the watering.

Have fun, and PREP, DAMMIT!!!

Day-um Omega, you must be in Texas chuckle We've had cool weather and then a few weeks of rain--we're just getting started in Virginia, but I'm weeks ahead of my neighbors.

We work our gardens into the landscaping at home, combining edible with decortative plants and where we can we use decorative edible plants. This is only our third summer in this home so we've been spending a good bit of time and $$ on the home and its systems and my dreams and plans always seem to well exceed the amount of money I have to buy materials with.

We're on a well and we are much more fortunate than our neighbors--they can actually run out of water from too many washer loads in the summer; they have a shallow well. We have what is called a storage well--the water enters ours at close to three times the enter well depth of our neighbors and then beneath that it effectively has a 3 foot round by 40 foot deep cistern which it keeps filled--this plus water tanks found on Craigs List from a farm in a neighboring county were key to garden irrigation. Without it we'd be in a bind as we do not have nor do i want a city water hook up.

Let me say I'm posting from the office so I'll need to bail before 1:00 and get back to work.

Here's the homestead, Casa del CourtDude -

Here we see the pathetic 15 gallon water tank the home had beside one of two tanks we replaced it with the larger tank is 90 gallons and in the background in the third pic you can see the 35 gallon tank that replaced the 15 gallon one under the house.

Our neighborhood was once a swamp, still is if we get too much rain so we're working to raise the ground and add better soil to the mix so for $300 the girls had a large dump truck of sifted top soil delivered.

Remember I said we're going for decorative and edible but honestly, my wife has selected what plants are where so far, so I'm not sure of everything in the pictures just yet. Here's the front of the house before the veggies were planted.

In the end each other is all we have.

RE: Garden Up 2011!!!
Thanks everyone for the comments. I do call it the compound, but figured that would sound a bit pretentious! Hi MM and RS!!

and this -

The girls kept busy -

To this, we've got tomattoes and peppers growing -

Here's that tilling project that just wouldn't end; we've surrounded the pool fence with what will be gardens for pole beans and black-eyed peas (they're Fergalicious chuckle )

We're gonna do something around this lampost, she already has it planned, I'm just the labor -

RE: Garden Up 2011!!!
Alrighty...Here is how the gardens look as of this morning.

Looking down the whole 40'x80' main garden. Salad greens (under cover), cauliflower, bok choi, beets, strawberries, onions, spinach, swiss chard, peppers, peas, tomatoes and a big patch of golden raspberries I didn't have a chance to move this season (note to self, never plant raspberries in an area you don't want overrun):

The other end of the big garden. Medicinal herbs like valerian, ashwagandha and others are next to the melons, two experimental patches of carrot seed from last year, asparagus and some pasture creeping in that I haven't conquered yet. I am thinking of using that old rickety ladder for a bean pole.

I still have black-eyed peas and beans and possibly popcorn to plant.

The squash garden. Not only is it still a bit nippy at night for tender seedlings, the quail have found them delicious as well so they are in their little white cups for now. This garden is about 20' x 40' and receives late afternoon high shade from one of my big oaks...helps in the 110° heat we can get.

Salad green under floating row covers. I've never eaten so much salad as this season. I just discovered arugula, yum!:

THe strawberries haven't been very sweet, still too cool...but things will be heating up soon, I'm sure!
