I'll take some pictures later. Hope you get enough water this summer. We're still below our yearly rainfall, but it has been a wet spring and everything is green.
Lookin' forward to the picts you smoke me every year, lol....
Looks like the drought here in Central Texas may finally be over, we'll see....

Definitely better luck on the water this year... You had a lot of hard work go up in smoke last year... Have a brother in northern Texas on Lake Texoma... Even that far north he has lost a lot of natural vegetation because of the drought...

RE: Garden up 2012!!!
I have a lot of peaches on my trees, and my apple tree is doing better than all prior years.
I might grow at least a few tomatoes, watermelons and cucumbers.

RE: Garden up 2012!!!
Glad to see this thread! The garden looks great, Omega!
Just wanted to say that this is my third year front-yard gardening in urban Austin, TX. Three years ago, our garden was the only visible veggie garden in the neighborhood. This year, I've counted 6 visible gardens within about 2 blocks of my house.
The gardening meme seems to be catching on! I also have a lot of neighbors who come by and ask questions, expressing interest in growing their own gardens. Very exciting!
It's really amazing to me to discover the social aspects of front yard gardening. I've had so many people stop and talk to me about my tomato plants - people I might not have ever had occasion to talk to before. I've made friends with a lot of the elderly neighbors this way, which is really nice.
We also planted 26 basil plants along the street this year (we don't have a fence, btw) with the intention of sharing with the neighborhood. Once the basil plants get a bit bigger, we're going to put out a sign inviting the neighbors to pick their own basil to take home.
I can't seem to upload pictures right now, but I'll try again later. Happy gardening, everyone!

RE: Garden up 2012!!!
Vegetable gardening can be made pretty easy. My early mistakes were to try and plant every inch in order to boost production for the given area, so I thought. Now I have plowed a wide area and have wide rows to cultivate the weeds with the tiller. You can get as picky as you want between weed pullings.
Last year I put news paper down around my tomatoes with straw on top of that before skewering the whole thing with the basket stakes. No weeds and more importantly, holds moisture in on a dry year like last year. Will be using the paper/straw thing on all that I can this year.
One more tip is grass clippings and wood ashes from your fireplace in the fall and winter. Puts nitrogen and minerals back in.

RE: Garden up 2012!!!
To early yet up here in MN, dropping to 34 degrees tonight. Will have one 4x12 raised bed this year and 4 round planters(cut in half 55 gallon plastic drums). All will go into veggies of some sort. Need to buy seeds next time I get to town.

Omega, what's your soil like out in Bastrop? Did you have to amend it a lot before planting?
I've heard that the soil differs in Austin depending on what part of town a person is in, ranging from very thin, sandy soil over solid limestone to thick, heavy clay soil. (I have the thick, heavy clay type.) I'm constantly trying to amend with organic matter. I can't make compost fast enough!

RE: Garden up 2012!!!
Nice. I have my small one going here in Vegas. I do mine in large built ups as I don't have much room. Plus soon I start covering during the hot part of the day, when temps hit over 100. I have spuds, carrots, peas, beans, and corn, broccoli. Plus tomatoes which will be ripe in a month. Berries already have been harvested here. Some may get a second harvest.
