What are Obama's motives?
Letter to the Editor
Updated: 08/29/2011 12:49:26 PM EDT

(snip)

...Removing the dollar from the gold standard, repealing the Glass-Steagall Act under Bill Clinton, repealing the Up-Tick rule under George Bush (which prevented naked short-selling which hurts the stock market), and bipartisan social engineering policies that pressured lenders into offering mortgages with low interest rates and little or no money down, to people who were high credit risks, all led to the financial crisis.

Both parties are responsible for the loss of American jobs overseas. The curlicue bulbs the government is mandating that everyone buy by 2014 are made in China. GE is getting government subsidies to create "green" technologies but escaped paying U.S. taxes on over $5 billion in American profits. The Obamacare mandates that will cause health insurance costs to increase on everyone, except Medicaid recipients, are a job killer. EPA mandates will soon shutter numerous coal-fired electrical generating plants, causing electricity costs to soar. Big business and their big government cronies are looting taxpayers -- wake up before it's too late...

I've seen lots of editorials and letters to the editor regarding Glass-Steagall since I started beating this drum(on forums) this spring. I won't post them all as I find them, but I encourage people to submit them to your local newspapers.

If you write your congressman, you can always do it as an "open letter" and drop copies to your local papers.

Too bad it doesn't have a sexier name. I have a feeling that "Freeway Blogging" would only elicit "WTF is that?" from most passers-by.

They should have called it the "Cage the Banksters Act" or something.

New Labor Support for Glass-Steagall
September 3, 2011 • 9:48AM

On the eve of Congress's return to Washington, the national pressure for that errant body to take the decisive action to protect the nation from disintegration by implementing the FDR-era Glass-Steagall law, is visibly growing.

On Aug. 31, the President of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, Gregory Junemann, sent a letter to every member of Congress, asking them to introduce and support the passage of H.R. 1489, Ohio Democrat Marcy Kaptur's Return to Prudent Banking Act, which would reinstate FDR's principle of Glass-Steagall separation between commercial and investment banking. The letter was also sent to every local of the IFPTE...

Glass-Steagall Demand Keeps Spreading
September 8, 2011 • 12:55AM

At least four new constituent endorsements of H.R. 1489, the "Return to Prudent Banking Act," were made Sept. 7, as two state labor organizations and two cities in the industrial belt demanded that Congress restore Glass-Steagall.

In addition, the third-largest daily newspaper in Utah, the Ogden Standard-Examiner, ran its lead editorial calling for Glass-Steagall, making a clean sweep of the major papers in the state. The editorial concluded, "We need jobs, but we can't provide jobs without a reformed Wall Street. Glass-Steagall was a response to a reckless financial era in the 1920s. We need the same response today. Do we have pols with the courage to stand up to the big money?"

Both the North Carolina International Association of Machinists, and the Iowa AFL-CIO passed endorsements of H.R. 1489, although LPAC does not have copies of the resolutions yet. In addition, the cities of Coatesville, PA, and Parma, OH, passed demands for Glass-Steagall restoration through their city councils.

The Parma resolution declares an economic emergency. It reads in part: "A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF H.R. 1489 THE RETURN TO PRUDENT BANKING ACT, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

"WHEREAS, H.R. 1489, The Return to Prudent Banking Act is now before the House of Representatives, which aims to revive the separation between commercial banking and securities business, in the manner provided in the Banking Act of 1933, called Glass-Steagall Act; and...

Reuters Wire: Most Likely Denmark's New Prime Minister Will Consider a Glass-Steagall-Style Division of the Banks
September 14, 2011 • 8:59AM

An international Reuters wire about yesterday's press conference with the chairman of Denmark's Social Democrats, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, entitled, "Danish Banks Could Face Tougher Rules After Vote," reports that Thorning-Schmidt "would be willing to discuss Glass-Steagall-style regulation, referring to the U.S. Act put in place after the 1929 stock market collapse, separating investment and commercial banking;" the reference was based on EIR's question to her at the International Press Center in Copenhagen.

The Friends of the Schiller Institute are fielding independent candidates, SI chairman Tom Gillesberg, and two other SI activists, with the widely discussed slogan, "Glass-Steagall — or Chaos," in the Sept. 15 parliamentary elections. The "Friends of the Schiller Institute" campaign, with very small forces, was designed to create the environment for the expected new government to adopt Glass-Steagall as soon as possible after it is adopted in the U.S.. Thorning-Schmidt's statements clearly show that there are factions in Europe which would immediately go for Glass-Steagall, if the U.S. were to take the lead.

Here is the transcript of the actual exchange:..

It is not worth saving because the math will never add up properly.

Something MUST be done and doing nothing only exacerbates the situation.

There is a LOT of hard fail coming so we should get on it now!

Controlled landing albeit a hard one.
