Have You Ever Smocked...?
no, I'm not talking about Smock Puppets, or s'mocking someone because they believe in fairies or garden gnomes that come alive at night and prance around your yard making crop circles in the grass...

I'm talking the kind of Smocking that separates a normal article of girl's clothing, into a very special heirloom to be passed down to subsequent generations....

unless of course, you wear the red gingham blouse you painstakingly smocked and sewed, on a high school rafting trip because it was lightweight and cool, then took it off midway down the river...shoving it snugly underneath your life jacket and your person.... because it wasn't as cool as you thought it was going to be....then later forgot it was there when you jumped into the slow part of the river to cool off, which unfortunately, loosened the handmade heirloom in the water, never to see it again, unless they drain the Colorado river for some odd reason.

anywho...this is similar, but not mine (obviously). Gingham is often used to Smock because of the built in patterned grid design that makes it easy to work off of.

So THAT'S what they call it.
I saw a video with some Russian lady showing examples of her "smocking" and the video was all in Russian so I could never know. Huh. Glad I know now.

Looks real nice though. Wouldn't know how to incorporate it into clothing patterns since it's obviously going to warp the fabric.

When a leaf falls, who's fault is it?
The tree that let it go,
The wind for blowing it away,
Or the leaf that got tired of holding on?

smocking requires special patterns that are about 3 times wider in the smocked area to allow for the amount of fabric that becomes gathered into tiny pleats.

I'd love to make matching smocked dresses for my new baby granddaughters, but I'd probably not finish the dresses until they're in high school... :D

Thats so feminine, i love it. Hardly ever see a decent skirt or dress anymore either. Ill never understand why women wont wear that stuff and go for mini skirts or pants or tshirts instead.

I've learned pintucks, but not smocking. Not yet.

RE: Have You Ever Smocked...?
It's easiest to use a smocking pleater.... machines always help. I haven't smocked in a very long time... it's nice to create beautiful things.

With crafts you can use a looser/broader smock pattern like these bracelets.

Pretty patterns at this website. Now I want to make something!!!
