I don't know much about them, but I've read a few things about cork counter tops that sounded great. If I remember correctly you can set hot pots & pans on them.

Then the Next Question what Material for the Kitchen sink to tie everything in?? I have heard some are using Copper.. But I am not good at coordinating stuff...(The Cabinets will be light pine..(honey maple color)

being a professional carpenter, i would say quartz or granite. both are quite trendy right now. granite doesn't necessarily have to be sealed, but it is a good idea. it's not that hard of a process though. simple enough you could do it your self. i personally prefer quartz, it's a little less expensive(in my area of the world) and colors seem to be a little more vibrant. marble is a good alternative too.in my 15 yrs experience, i've never seen a hot item such as a skillet or pan right off the stove damage a granite or quartz counter top, but i suppose there is always the possibility.

hgtv is a carpenter's worst nightmare...too many home owners watch it and get craazy ideas that aren't feasible in their particular home, and when the carpenter tries to duplicate it(because the home owner is always correct) the home owner most often isn't happy with the result, as compared to what they saw on tv. please take hgtv with a grain of salt, just like all tv programming.

Whatever material you get make the color copper, as in "copper brass". That way, in a SHTF scenario and you have to hole up you can quickly clamp a reloading press to it and crank out some rounds while having a nice cup of coffee. LOL.

Naw seriously I would never spend the THOUSANDS of dollars for granite or fancy stone, etc. Seems to me to be a waste of money, I am all about practicality...on a budget.
